THIS LUTHERAN VISITOR
February 13, 1902
gelMfad* Men—An Eximple for tho
American Tooth.
There are a lot of new congress
men in Washington this winter,
and many of them are "self-made”
men. To be a congressman is a
high ambition for an American boy,
and one which many an American
boy cherishes. It is seldom gratified.
Of the many congressmen who have
talked about their early ambitiocs
only one began life with the firm
determination to be a member of
congress. He was a southern man,
and he educated himself with the
house of representatives always in
his eye. When the voice of the
people called be was undoubtedly
ready.
*‘My first money was made by
ordinary manual labor," said
Joseph T. Johnson of South Car
olina. Mr. Johnson is too modest a
man to tell all that this represents
of hardship and struggle, but Dr.
Smith, bis family physician, ha 4
told the story of his early struggle*.
His father died when he was tw»»
years old, and his mother when he
was 14. “I have always understood
that he cut cord-wood, picked cot
ton, hoed cotton, and did what
work be could get to do on Satur
days and in vacation,” says Dr.
Smith. M I have seen many a time
the oxen he drove through the
streets of Dus West morning and
evenings before and after college
hours, in order to make money to
pay his expenses. That he suc
ceeded in getting a splendid ed
ucation no man will deny. He
made a special study cf economic
questions and, in my opinion, is
the beat informed man in tbe state.”
Capt. Hobson of Merrlmac Fans
Washington, February 5.—It is
expected that an effort will be made
to obtain legislative authorization
for the retirement of Constructor
Hobson from the naval service.
Capt. Hobson is now inWasbington
and is desirous of retiring, basing bis
application on the bad state of his
eyes, resulting from exposure in
working on Spanish ships after the
late war. The naval retiring board
concluded that his disability was
not sufficient to warrant the retire
ment under the existing regula
tions and recourse must be had to
congress. It is believed that the
navy department will approve of
such legislation if its opinion is
called for by congress.

Scrofula
Scrofula ia an unwelcome legacy, but one which
the children of blood poisoned parentage must
accept, with all its humiliating consequences. It is
an inheritance that makes one poorer; that brings
wretchedness snd disease instead of health _ and
riches, for the child whose ancestral blood is tainted
with Scrofula or the loathsome virus of Contagious
Blood Foison is unfitted for the arduous duties of
life so long as any of the transmitted poison remains " "" ''V* r
in its veins. Scrofula manifests itself in various forms; swollen glands about the
neck and throat, catarrh of the head, weak eyes, hip bone disease, white swelling
and offensive sorea and abscesses are familiar symptoms, attended usually with
loss of strength, poor digestion and pale or bloodless complexion. The skin is
sometimes most dreadfully affected, eruptions breaking out on all parts of the body.
Scrofula destroys bone, tissue and flesh; po part of the human system escapes its
