perhaps have prolonged that life
for still further and greater use
fulness in the church on earth?
To me this brother’s death is a
strong appeal to strive to do
more to encourage and assist the
“brethren,” and it seems to me
that pastors and congregations
ought to read in.it an earnest
admonition to be more consider
ate, more helpful toward their
brethren in the Lord who are
called to minister to them of the
things of the kingdom of God.

SOUHD THOUGHT.
Bishop McTyeire used the fol
lowing as a personal reminder:
“In preparing for the pulpit I
have sometimes desired that my
sermon should be a good one.
rather than it should bring sin
ners to Christ, and have labored
more to give it this quality than
I have prayed for divine bless
ing to give it success. I must
avoid this error, for without
God's grace what will human ef •
forts avail toward saving souls?
I now see that I have relied too
much on the influences of the
simple power of truth to convert
sinnersand too little on the in
fluences of the Holy Spirit to
give effect to that truth, hence
my sermons have often been
addressed to the intellect rather
than to the heart. It has followed
that I have not expected.nor en
joyed that Spirit in the act of
preaching. What is divine truth
but the sword of the Spirit? In
preaching I have not generally
looked for immediate results, but
have endeavored to satisfy my-
sely that I was sowing seed that
at some time would produce a
harvest.! But if.Godi is always
willing to save sinners, and if
the preaching of the Gospel is
His chosen instrument for this
purpose, why might I not al
ways look to for immediate re
sults?
“When’I had done what I
could, both in my study and my
pulpit, I have not been, as I now
think, anxious.as I should be to
see the fruits of my preaching,
and therefore have not followed
my public, labors with much
earned closet ‘prayer. I must
avoid this error. How can I ex
pect God to give me success if I
do not ask it?”

assailed the religion . of Jesus
Christ, and he said he would
have become an infidel but for
three things.
“First, I am a man. I .am go
ing somewhere. To-night. I am

such books can tell. me. They
shed not one solitary ray upon
the darkness. They shall not
take away the only guide and
leave me stone-blind.
“Second, 1 had a mother. I
saw her go down into the dark
valley where I am going, and
she leaned on an unseen arm as
calmly as a child goes to sleep
on the breast of its mother. I
know that was not adreain.
“ 'Third, 1 have three mother-
