January 23, 1902 THE LUTHERAN VISITOR 7 THE HOME LIGHT. The tight of home’s a'woDdrous light. So tender is its shining, So soft it follows'through the night, Our we&ry.ro&d outlining. Though lonely and for years we roam, Far from'the ones who love ue, Yet ever>hines the light [of hoim - , Like God’e'grace spread above us. The light of home’s a wondrous light, Through life it follows, seeming, Yet when with [age the hair ,1s white, Clear.in.the frontu’tis gleaming It shines from where our, loved ones are, 0, this is love divining! Anditbrough the gates of heaven ajar. At last we see it shining! DRY DOCTRINES. The principal object of preach ing is to present the doctrines of the Bible. Two or three doc trines of the New Testament be lieved would revolutionize all China. The* gospel never did nor never can spread.but by preaching Jts...doctrines. The great work.of the whole Chris tian church in all lands is to make known the glad tidings of great joy. The efficiency of any church or preacher depends principally on, the perspicuity with which the doctrines are set forth. Church history is not wanting to show this. A plain case is now well known. The Salvation] Army, without col leges and other great; adjuncts, surpasses all other churches in making known the glorious car dinal doctrines, and insisting on them, leaving ethics to follow, as they surely do. It.has been said that doctrinal preaching is dry. No doubt to some it is. It was a stumbling- block to the Jews, and. to the Greek foolishness; but to those that believe, “the.'power of God and the wisdom;;of God.” The fact is, instead of being dry, nothing is so interesting, not.to say exciting, as the finding of our great salvation.—J. H. Creighton, in Advocate. Mr. Hole's Advice on Marriage A young man recently wrote to the editor of The Ladies Home Journal asking: “What have you to say, squarely and fairly, to a young man of twenty-nine who is about to marry.” In the October Journal Mr. Bok uses a a page for his answer. Its sal ient points are these: That a man should make the woman of his choice his chum, as well as his wife: that he should show her the highest consideration as well as love her; that he should remember that he owes his wife to her mother, and treat his mother-in-law with respect, at least; that he should keep his wife informed as to his income; that he should give her a regular allowance and that he should have his life insured in her favor. And, above all, that when a young man marries he must re member that he leaves the world of another and self. ‘ GODLINESS WITH CONTENTMENT IS GREAT GAIN." “It ain’t so hard to be con tented with the things we have,” said the old woman, dolefully. “It’s being contented with the things we haven’t that’s so try ing.” “I don’t know about that; I don’t know,” said Uncle Silas. “When we begin .to look at the hair from spin;.- •> ;.r. c-ims.’ — £ J.
