CURRENT LITERATURE.
The excellence and variety of the
featoies presented by tbe February
Dumber of The Delineator are typi
cal of the progressiveness of.this
favorite woman’s magazine. The
fuhion matter is as timely as
ipecial correspondents at the
world’s most important > fashion
^Saeutree can make it. IraD Sankey
continnes the story ot his tour, and
bis description of tbe Holy Land
it even more interesting than his
itoryof the journey through Ej^ypt.
Prof. Anthony Barker contributes
the first erries on Athletics for
Women, the articie dealing with
Physical Culture at Home. Dr.
Grace Peckham Murray introduces
a series of articles on Child .Train
ing by describing tbe disposition
and tendencies of every day chil
dren. In the series of Notable
Women Dr. S. R. Elliott gives
some interesting glimpses of Char
lotte Cushman. A finely illus
trated article on The Treasures of
Jewish Ceremonial is contributed
by Waldon Fawcett. The story by
Helen Choate Prince, Reflected
Lights, has all the delicate charm
of that author’s work, and Tbe
End of a Resolve, by Margaret
Willians Beardsley, is full of
dramatic interest. A Disappear
ing Race is a profusely illustrated
article treating of Poor Lo’s squaw
and the papoose. In the house
hold' department Alice M. Kel
logg deals in a practical way with
floor coverings; Margaret Hall
gives the first of her lessons in
Cookery; and Anna W. Morrison
illustrates a table attractively set
for a Washington Lunch. Tbe
childrden’s pages maintain their
high standard. The other depart
ments of the magazine have their
usual interest.
Are England, Scotland and Ire
land destined, ultimately, to be
come apart of "The United States
of America and Great Britain”? is
the startling inquiry which Wil
liam T. Stead makes in the Jan
uary Cosmopolitan. He has been
one of the prophets of Great Brit
ain, and has, at all times, been
able to see in addance of his con-
temporaries-as events have proven.
He has been studying the new
conditions brought about by the
industrial combinations and reaches
the conclusion that England and
the United States are destined to
be more closely united and that as
as the English pwople wake up to
the absurdity and general useless
ness, as has been shewn in the
Boer war, of a king and aristocra
cy, the trend will be immediate in
the direction of a union with the
people of the United States How
ever much one may differ from Mr.
Btead, his speculations will be
found vastly interesting. He is
the first British subject who has
had the courage to suggest such an
outcome. An article which will
prove of the widest interest to all
those engaged in teaching or who
may he iptqrestod ip edqcaUon is
one by Elisha Benjamin Andrew's,
THE LUTHERAN VISITOR
ex-president of Brown University,
who for tbe fiist time, iu a leading
magazine, has 1 ad the courage to
show the great evils resulting from
the private eontrnpt. ol book

If the old saying, "All the
world loves a lover,” is true, then
the fiction in The Cosmop ditan for
January should he popular, indeed.
All the stories vary iu treatment,
plot and action, from Frances
Courtenay Baylor's charming
story, "Cupid’s Practical Joke,” to
Maarten Maarten’s strong domestic
tragedy, "Her Father’s Wife,”
but all have love for a central
them.
