Thomas Estrada Palma was
elected president of Cuba on Tues

A vestibule train on the Balti
more & Ohio road jumjied the
track near Pittsburg, Pa., on
Wednesday. Three persons were
killed instantly and 17 injured,
five seriously.
The annual report of the state
board of control shows that the
net profit for the year from the
dispensaries is $545,248.12. Of
this amount $424,285.87 goes to
the state and counties, the balance
to the public schools.
The Maryland councils of the
Junior Order of Mechanics on
Monday night presented Admiral
Schley with a magnificent medal
studded with diamonds as evidence
of their esteem and admiration of
his services to his country.
Admiral Schley has declared
that he will take no further steps
in the investigation. His friends,
however, will ask congress to vindi
cate him by retiring him on full
pay and reimbursing him for ex
penses of the trial.
President Roosevelt has ap
pointed Dr. J. L. M. Curry to
represent the United States at the
coronation of King Alphonso XIII
of Spain in May. The appoint
ment was made at the suggestion
of the king's mother. Dr. Curry
was our minister to Spain when
the young king was born, 18 years'
ago.
Bristol, Tenn, December 30.—
High water has washed away
three spans of the Virginia and
Southwestern railway bridge at,
Elizal)ethtown, two spans of the
bridge at Butler, half a mile of
track between Elizabethtown and
Max head, and several trestles on
the Tennessee division of the road,
forcing a suspension of traffic.
The Tennessee and Western
North Carolina railroad has also
suffered serious washouts.

The man with the crutch never fails to arouse the deepest sympathy and
