THE LUTHERAN VISITOR, CHARLESTON, 8. C., SKITEMBER 11, 1874 H^lft of meeting with bis good jyjy * daughter of Rev. Q. Haiti Tirf or. Sr.. deceased. Mr. Hendrix tad lady interested in oar wel ^ glad to meet a*, bat truly sorry a, find o* in such bad health. Since gt have been here they have done jU they can to make us comfortable r a hannv. 'Among the hundred* of inhabitants and visitors of tho place, they 1116 tbe oul ‘ V two w ° hare ^ that we knew. They took us to dttir place of boardiug, mode us as nT ^fr.rtablo as they could, until Mr. llemiT .x could look around and ee- a • iaco of boarding for us. HickoryQuit* a idaco of resort for istw&df and board, at this season of the year, in private houses, is pretty hard to find. There are two hotels with splendid accommodations. How <*ver, we have very comfortable quar tets at Mr. Weisiger’s in a retired n-rt of the town. We have been eriy that has beau acquired la WaJ ha!la has bera steered by the par mmm giving It in such a way m to toaka it Impossible for the creditors of the old institution to take U away, hence I have always regarded it as exceedingly unprofitable to bo doting about question* relating to what waa done previous to the snrreudn of the Newberry property to tbs New berry creditor*. Alt is gone, lire deem ably gone, and settled forever Like (bat targe and prosperous financial institution ever which Bro Honour so long and so ably presided, it has gone into “forbearance of dis closure.” The courts hare made an end of it, and to them should be referred the ahriehers for “light.” Wbat has been done dace thea la recorded in the hooka of the iaallta tion, as such things are aeoally done in all other institution*, and open to the inspection of all who wish to look at them. The financial part of these records waa one* carefully pee pared for publication, the manuscript offered to ttyuod, and tty and refused to publish because (1) they did not wish to incur the expense, and (J) because they had appointed eighteen Christian tuen, tn whose honor and efficiency they ooofided, to ate that thing* were proporly conducted ~~ And for several year* the Rev. Mr Honour himself waa a member of that Board, when it waa not only his privilege, but bit solemn duty to go to Walballs, and unearth and expose the “raw.head* and bloody bone*” which the distempered imagi nation* of aoaie unknown “people” have buried there. In the reports of the treasurer* aud secretaries of the iaatitatioo which are so seelouslj rm.ci.vd, it was only asked and intended to fur Utah u statement of the accomplished results of the year, and oa two ooea sious, u> my distinct recollect too. wheu more vtdumiuous statistics sere offered to tty nod, the pmhiscntMm of these transcripts from the booh* was declined for the reasons already stated. Hence, if there is a College Board “on this continent, or tn the world, that has managed its affairs more openly and publicly than New berry College has done,” we would be glad to hear of it, that «« might follow its example! And now, in conclusion, let me take illy seat, like the poor, deputed publican, at the fret of that “elder soldier, aud much better,” and try to profit by bis “good, feeling" **»d vice.” 1. “Curb your temper and subdue your indignation.” Verily, I never knew, until the month of August, in the year of grace 1ST» that when a man or set of men should be accused of having done what never was done, and they, in plain, calm and emphatic language, deny the charge, that such dental waa an exhibition of “ill-temper" ami “irolig uation.” When Pant said, in reply to an unjust accusation, “1 am not mail, most noble Festas,” be most have lawn in a terrible fit of “tern per” and “indignation.” When the converts, on the day of lVntorost, were incorrectly accused of being drunk on new wine, Peter must have been in an awfut “temper” when he said, ‘‘These are not drunken, nut ye suppose.” But let ns suppose that my defence of the Board and Faculty was an “illtempered" and “indig nant" defence, the accuser was “a private correspondent of the editor," of whom Bro. Honour says, “I do not know who the private eorre spoil dent of the editor is.” Is it not therefore somewhat “mirabile diets" (wonderful to be told) that the teacher and exemplar of a loving Christian “temper 7 ! should labor ao hard to share and to perpetuate the quarrels of other men f Whilst this seeming conflict be tween precept and example is a little confusing to a poor, ignoraut fellow, who has no more sense than “a stal wart negro” at a “camp meeting, vociferating, in a stentorian voioe, hullabulloo” I will nevertheless try, in all sincerity, to “curb” my “tem per, B which, whatever* it may have been towards others, bos always been towards Bro. Honour a teoi|wr of sincere affection and brotherly lovet . I can not close this article, already too long, without bearing testimony to the superior excellence of Bro. Houour’s polemical ethics and the accuracy with which they are illus trated. “Declamation is not argument.” How glad we are of that I As it follows that when the President of the Board of Newberry College and his defence of the institution is com pared to a “stalwart negro” at a Methodist camp-meeting, “vocifer ating, in a stentorian voice, hulla- bullooy hullabuUooit is no “argu ment” against the College, its Board, or its Faculty; it is ail “declama tion P “Nor,” says onr author, “is aaser- j tion demonstration.” tight—that ttywroitoal (imwMm who nndertak* to foot Into these things con ooly bo credited feqr pNfy fftfl ggjgg£ Hgy IfejigH —ell Ibis afford* no "demon slraltaa” that there hi earthing wrung with the College | it is simply “osawr to whom be sit the glory end praise.
