Twinkling of the Stan.
Thy subject of the twinkling of
star* has engaged a good deal of at*
ted lion of htto years, and some in*
tefeating result* have been obtained.
A few years ago, the Italian astrono
mer, Respighi, atffrownotd the dis
covery of th© cause of fdwfilluttOQ
in certain dark bands which war*
seen to traverse the spectrum of a
star, indicating changes in the hr-
frangibility of our atmosphere, from
hot and cold strata, which produce
something of the effect of a paaamg
mirage. A layer of hot air would
bead U»e rays lews than the colder
and denser air around, and thus th*
star’s light would not reach the ob
server, rays which traversed the hot
stratum passing over bis head, and
those which traversed the cold air
below being bent ao as to fall beneath
f»is feet. As the rays of different
colors aie differently beat in their
passage through the air (the red rays
being the least refracted), different
parts of a star’s spectrum would l*>
thus cat off in succession, as the
relative temperatures of the Layers

M. Montiguy, of Brussels, bos been
investigating the amount of acintil-
lation in different stars by the help
of an ingenious contrivance, to which
he give© the name of scintillometer.
His plan is to make use of the per
sietenoe of impressions on the retina,
by cansing a thick plate of glass,
unonuted obliquely on an axis par
allel to that of the telescope used,
and Axed just la front of the eye
piece, to rotate rapidly; the effect of
this ia to displace the star’s Image,
so that, owing to the varying incli
nation of the glass plate, the star
appears to move in a circle, which, if
the rotation is rapid enough (three
or four times in a second% forms a
continuous circle of light, jest as ia
the case of a bandog stick whirled
rapidly. The change* In the odor of

changes and the constitution or the
stellar tight, for it is easy to eee that
rays which am deficient can not be
acted on by undulations of the aP
mosphere, and that there will there
fore be fewer change* of color the
