went up n steep staircase to a small
room about 20 feet by 14, where
jewels to the value of six or seven
millions were laid out on carpets at
the far end of tho room. Near the
jewels, on a chair, sat the Mustauflul
Mumalik, or Persian Cbaucellor of
the Exchequer, aud being a Say id,
wore the sawed color.
Iu such a show of gems as seemed
to realize Urn wouilurs of Aladdin's
lamp, *7® wfi* to ° 'u«*eh dazzled
aud tho memory too confused for
description to b© possible. But I
remember that at the back of all was
the Kaianian crown, ami on either
side of it two Persian lambskin caps,
adorned with splendid aigrettes of dia
tuouds. The crown itself was shaped
like a flowerpot, w ith the small end
oi»en and the other closed. On the
top of the crown was au uncut ruby,
apparently without flaw, ns large is
a hen's egg. In front of tb« crown
were dresses covered with diamonds
and pearls; trays with necklaces of
pearls, rubies and emeralds, and
some hundreds of diamond, ruliy,
and turquoise rings. In front of
these, again, were gauntlets and
belts covered with rubies and dia<
morals j and conspicuous among them,
the Kaiatihtu belt, about a foot deep,
weighing perhaps about eightee*
pound*, aud one complete mass of
l>carls, diamonds, emeralds and ru
hies. Still ucaer to us stood adriuk
iag bowl, completely studded with
enormous jewels ; a tray full of
foreign orders set iu UriUiaubs and
in front of all lay a dozen swords,
one* or two of which are worth
quarter of a million each. Along
with these were epaulettes, covered
with diamouds, aud armlets so coi
Dived that the brilliants revolved
aud kept up a contiuuoas scintilla
tion.
It was difficult among so many to
single out particular getus. Perhaps,
however, the Brut place ought to he
assigned to the famous “Darya i-
Noir,* or “Sea of Light," the sister
diamond to oar Punjab trophy, the
“Koli i-Sor," or “MouuUiu of Light."
It is an inch and a half long, au
inch broad, and three eighths of an
inch thick, it has the name Path
eighths of an inch broad. The color
was lovely, and almost as refreshing
to the eye as Pereiaa poets pretend.
There are also as maay sapphires as
large as marbles, end rubies end
pearls the alas of nuts; and 1 am
certain that I ooented nearly a boa
dred emeralds from lmlf an ioeh
square to sti Inch and three- quarters
long and an Inch broad. In the
sword scabbard, which Hi covered
with diamouds, there is oat |**rh*ps
