CHARLESTON. In a former communication wa Htated our arrival and cordial recep tiou iu Charleston Rev. Prof. G. W. Hoi bu nl, of IV a C. The city appears old to a stranger, and baa about it many marks of the war. Rev. W. 8. Bowman on Monday morning very kindly brought hie pony aud phaeton around to our hotel and took os about the city and nut to Magnolia cemetery aud an atboiniug grove of magnificent live- oaks which, with their broad and interlocking brauckea aod hanging mosses, formed a very temple of uature, with broad aisles, columns, arches and covering of exceedingly grand proportions and beauty. Rev. T. W. Dosh subsequently took us to the orphan asylum, an institntkMi of which the Charlestonians may be justly proud. The building ia the finest aud most commodious we ever saw for an institution of this kind. From the top of it we had a very tine view of the city aud harbor. He also took ua to see the extensive rice mills of Mr. Chiaolm, where we saw the entire operation of cleaning aud pieparing rice for the market. We made the acquaintance of toveral families of Charleston, into each of which we were received with aa much cordiality aud welcome Ml if we had been an old acquaintance end friend. Every family here hue gone through an experience in the war, of which we of the North eati have but little conception. A terrible gloom hangs over Charleston and all South Carolina iu the miserable mis rule by which they now are governed. If the iucubus of her present legisla ture could be removed, there hi no doubt a great future of prosperity would open to this city by the sea *ith her fine harbor aud great com mercial advantages aud refined aod hospitable people.
