II. Elk River Settlement. I
learned, whilst at Charleston, that
man families about eight utiles from
Charleston up Elk River. It was
principally because I had no means
of conveyance, and because of the
almost impassible condition of tbe
road* at the time, that I did not
visit this settlement. I learned that
they were supplied with the Word
anil the sacrament* by a Presby
terian minister.
UL Trinity Evangelical Lu-
tHRRAN Congregation. Winfield,
of which place mention has already
been made, is situated on the Great
Kanawha River twenty-three miles
below Charleston. Home four or five
miliMt back of Winfield, and amongst
the lull*, is a settlement of from ten
(» twenty families from Pennsylva
nia, which have migrated thither
since the war, being attracted by tbe
ehoapueuK *f its lands. Haviug been
in couuecUou with tbe Pittsburg
Hyuod whilst they lived in Pennsyl
vania, they petitioned the Rev. Dr.
Paasavsat of that body to send some
one to them to minister unto them
ia spiritual things. In reply to their
appeal, the Rev. W. O. Wilaou was
seat to visit them. The time of his
visit was during the month of April,
1862. From amongst them be orga
nized a congregation under the above
title, af ten members—four men and
six women. Of the four male mem
bers two were cboeeti elders and two
deacons. From tbe Minutes of the
Thirtieth Convention of tbe Pitts
burg Hyuod, held August 21 st-37th,
1872, 1 have learned that arrange
meats were made at that meeting to
supply thinoougregation with preach
ing dimug the following Synodical
year. Such arrangements were ef
fected by some of the ministers of
tbe Synod volunteering to spend a
portiou of tbe year in performing
missionary duties iu the Kanawha
Valley, w. Va. Provision was made
by Synod for the defraying in part
of their traveling expenses by re
solving that two thirds of such ex
penses be paid out of the Home
Mission Treasury. From whatever
cants, however, said arrangements
were not carried out, as none of these
men ever visited the Valle j. From
the time of the visit of Rev. Wilson
in April, 1872, to that of mine, Feb
ruary 1st, 1874, this congregation,
with tbe exception of the visit to ii
last summer of Mr. Rahn, a theologi
cal student at Salem, Va., has been
without preaching by a minister of
