“The second year of oar Lord’s
niluintry oa sarth began by his going
up to Jerusalem to attend the Pas
sover. Near the city upon the east
side of it was a certain pool of water
called Betheada, which means Boose
of Compassion. This pool had five
porticoes surrounding it, and these
were filled with a great somber of
people. Some were lame, others
blind; some had withered hands aud
limbs, and some terrible coogju—a
great collection of miserable looking
objects and sad to look upon**

“Why, there was a tradition that
at certain times in the year as angel

into the pool directly afterwards, he

as this pool is still there, ami no
healing qualities are uow ascribed to
its water, we must believe that its
virtue depended upon the miraculous
appearance of an angel, as those
heavenly beings frequently euare to
earth in the ancient times. There
was a poor man lying there who was
perfectly helpless. For thirty-eight
years he had been afflicted by sick
ness. Poor fellow, he had anxiously
waited and watched for the waters
to be troubled by the angel, sad had
tried upon each occasion to reach
the pool and avail himself of its
blessed healing benefits; but as he
was too poor to hire anybody to pat
him into the water, he could never
get there quick enough aad some one
else would be before him. Jesus
knew this foot, aad m be looked at
the crowd of miserable beings and
saw this poor man, he felt great com
passion for his helpless state. Ho he
spoke to him sad asked him if be
wanted to be made well The sick
man said, *0 yes, indeed I do, bat
you see, sir, I am so friendless, that
wben the angel comes and troubles
the water, I have nobody to put are
into it, and while 1 am slowly trying
to get there, somebody steps m be
fogs me and I have to wait till the
next time.’ Jesus said, ‘I will care
yon. Stand up and take np your

they scolded about his breaking the
Sabbath. Jesus told them that his
