^ grand, the awfully sublime iu

I had visited ancient, baronial Imtla
^ magnificent palaces, on which
Vitold sains of money hud been lav-

pa iabarinthine walks and flowery
paths of the most celebrated garden*
of Europe ; I had goue with the mnl*

tjotmts of blood; I had sought the
birthplace and burial-place of many
«f the mighty of the earth ; 1 had
ata illustrious statesmen, monarch*,

celebrities of every grade and char

Quilt, after I had entered its pon
derous gate and stood withiu its ex
tnsiva courtyard. I could some
macs scream with delight ou the
Alps when inhaling that pure atmos
pbero, which acted on me like exbil-
uating gas ; I was filled with a sort
of poetic sentimentalism, of which
fur persons would suspect ine, when
1 visited Melrose Abbey, and hail a
glorious view of it “by the pale
■ooolight,’’ and guided too, let me
tufiyoo, by the wife of the veritable
Many Bowers, celebrated by Ir-
mg in his “Abbotsford”—but all
1 and many other excited or snb-
dwl feelings, poetical or sentimen
tfi were nothing in comparison with
Hose awakened at Wartburg. A
«rt of religions awe came over me.
1 felt sis if I were entering into tbe
presence of Luther’s spirit, and that
I* would speak to tne. I made him
warsate and clothed him with sac
rrdotal vestments ; and when I enter-
si tbe room which the mighty man
bd occupied, I sat down for a mo
moot to relieve my heart, over
charged with emotion. It was not
»tears, though it required an effort
te aoppress them ; it was not in
von!?, fur the power of utterance
failed out; it was iu tumultuous
Shonghts that welled up unbidden
and flowed over in continned
streams.
1 pictured myself a visitor to Lu
ther, and wished to enter into con-
c»*rsatiou with him. I pictured to

! l»ree hundred years ago. There he

that magnificent head. One
be looks upon the ponderous
bourne open before him, which I

**“1 then again he would turn his

window upon the beautiful land-

new that he was engaged in the

Sometimes, indeed, it sseassd as
though he were psrpiexed by a

appeared to me ss though, Maid
his doubts about verbal dMMcwittes

Melauchtlioti, or Bsgeahsgan, «w

remarkable uaan and dared net after
a word. 1 had stealthily parted foam
my companions that ! might bs

the hero of tbe Reformation.
Neither bis |>ereooal sppearnnoe

pictnred. I expetdeit to are him

of hair fell down to his shoulders.
He wore a short, loose upper gar
meat, slashed in the nrma, and henry
military boots that reached above
his knees. Him upper lip was per
fusely covered with n heavy moo
stache that completely hid his mouth,
aud a beard of appalling length
hung down upon bin brunet, lie
looked leery like a modern Raw

stood leaning against tbs tabla, aad

decked with a beeatifat plume, that
gracefully foil over the top aad Rds.
I then remembered that ha had
assumed an iacepsifo, and played
the part of Knight George, to avoid
the suspicion of bis enemies.
The room was famished in very
ordinary style. It would ba con
sidered decidedly common at the
present time, but It waa Luther’s,
and that is enough to consecrate it.

such a place.
My companions consisted of a
German family I bad met at Frank

had become intimate. As wo wees
toiling up tbe hill in the morning,
one of the ladles, much more sedate
than her younger sister, mid to me
in a very serious tone, *•! am staking

worse than pestilence, but now,

to pour out her feelings, and spoke
most rapturously of Luther and lha

speak with this lady upon this sub

tbe new faith she had adopted, for
she waa yet weak} and one of the
most pleasing reminiscences of my
visit to Wartburg, aside from the
historical interest of the place, is tha
