Lord of earth ! Thy boantcoaa hand
Well this glorious frame hath planned:
Woods that ware, and kills that tower,
Ocean rolling In hU power,
All that strikes the gaae an nought.
AU that charms the lonely thought j
Friendship, gem transcending pries;
Lore, a flower of Paradise;
Yet, amid this scene so fair,
Should I ©esse thy sssile to share.
What were all its joys to me!
Whom bare 1 in heaven but thee!
Lord of heaven! beyond oar sight
) Bolls s world of pare light;
There, in Lore’s unclouded reign.
Parted hands shall join again j
Martyrs there, and prophets high.
Blase, a glorious company;
While immortal mnaio rings
From unnumbered eeraph-etriags;
Oh, that scone it passing fair!
Yet shoaldst thou bs absent there.
What were all its joys to me!
Whom have I in heaven Bat thee!
Lord of earth and heaven! any breast
Seeks in thee its only rest!
I was lost: thy accents mild
Homeward lured thy wandering child.
I was blind: thy healing ray
Charmed the long eclipse sway.
Source of every toy I know.
Solace of my every woe;
Yet should once thy smile divine
Cease upon my soul to shine,
What were heaven or earth to ms!
Whom have I in heaven but thee!

JOHN THE BAPTUT.
“Some few months before the birth
of the Lord Jtsas Christ do old
priest by the name of Zacharies
went into the temple to barn ineeu
before the Lord, as was the custom
in those days, nod while he won en
gaged in that way he was praying
to God to falfll the deeire and ex
pectations of the nation and to tend
the promised Messiah. He woe a
very good and righteous man, and
bis wile, Elisabeth, is spoken of an
being an excellent woman. This old
couple had no children, they were
alone in the world. While Zaohanaa
was praying, the people outside of
the altar of incense were also pray
log to God; and as the smoke of the
fragrant incense ascended it bore
with it the united prayers of the
people and priest, which waa a more
acceptable offer iugito God than even
the sacred incense. Suddenly a poo
the right side of the altar there
stood a bright, shiniog angel of the
Lord. Zachariaa was frightened to
see the angel, for it was an unusual
appearance at that period; but the
angel spoke to him and told him not
to be afraid, that God had heard hia
prayer, and that the coming of the
Lord was at hand. To fulfil the
prophecies, his advent should be pra
ceded by a messenger, who should
have the spirit and power of Elijah
of old, and should proclaim the Lord
to the people and make thorn ready
to receive the Messiah. For this
purpose 'a son should be given to
Zacharias and bis wife, and they
should call his name John. This sou
should be the chosen messenger of
the Lord. Zacharias, at first, could
hardly believe that bis prayers were
to be heard, and be said, ‘Hot shall
1 know thisf that is, give me some
sign, that I may know your words to
be true.”
“I should have thought that teeing
an angel of God would have con
vinced him of the troth of tho mes
sage, mother; for angels tell the
troth.”
“Yes, I should think myself that
would have been sign enoogh, but
the angel said to him, ‘I am Gabriel
that stand in the preeenoe of God,
and I am sent to tell yon these glad
tidings; bat I will give you the sign
you ask. Behold yon shall be dumb
and not able to speak until the day
that the little boy arrives at your
boose, because yon do not believe
my words.’”
“Did the angel stay after be said
that, mother V
“No, be vanished, and when Zach
arias went oat to the people be
couldn’t ipeek a word, and made
motions with his hand to them that
be had seen a vision.”
“What ia a vision, mother !”
“An appearance of a spirit or as-
pernatural object, something that we
can not explain exactly, but it comes
from the other world. Well, after a
few months, one day the Lord sent
this old priest the promised little
boy, and ha ealiid his name John, as
the angel had told him to do. Then
his tongue waa unloosed, and he
spoke and praised God, and said
seme prophetic words of John’s fu
ture life and of the promised Mes
siah. The little boy grew stroag and
well, and when be waa twslve yean
old he left his* home and went into
the, wilderness, being;? led by the
Holy Spirit of God. It is usually
thought that he spent many years
upon the'mountain ^called Horeb.
