origin. The argument from the Old
Testament may be objected to by
some, on the ground that we live
under a different dispensation and

Paul does the same thing in the *tb
chapter of 1st Corinthians, to show
to those brethren that they were
under obligations to supply the tern
poral wants of those who ministered
to them in spiritual things, lie
says; 4 ‘I>o ye not know that they
which minister about boly things live
of the things of the temple 1 and
they which wait at the altar are par
takers of the altar 1” Here he evt
dently refers to the command and
custom of ’fhich 1 s|ioke ia my
former article, and be then adds:
“Krau so hath the Lofd ordained
that they which pRescb the geapel
should live of the gospel." Again,
in Paul’s first letter to Timothy, be
says: “Let the elders that rale well
be counted worthy of double honor,
especially they who labor in word
sod doctrine. For Che Scripture
saith, thou shall not moxsle the ox
that treadeth out the corn. And the
laborer is worthy of his reward."
The word rendered reward here
meaus compensation for services per
formed, and we Infer from this text
that a minister’s compensation should
be in proportion to the amount of
labor jierformed, or rather that it
should depend upon the manner in
which it is performed We see then
that the support of ministers ia not
regarded in the word of God as aa
act of benevolence, but as a compen
sation for service rendered. Then is
it as imperative ou those to whom a
pastor ministers to support him, as
it is for them to compensate their
lawyers, their physicians, or aay
other class of persons who saay havs
served them. Men very often plead
the disposition that ministera make
of their salaries as an excuse (or pre
tended ooe) for their not giving any
thing, as they call ii, towards sop
porting their pastors. As well might
they bring up sueb a ptea aa a reason
for not paying their physician. >o
one thinks of this, simply because
the doctor makes individual charge*
tor his services. The preacher de
pends upon the congregation or con
gregations for bis support. Again:
all are required to give, whether rich
or poor, but the amounts given mast
de|>ead upon the ability of those who
give. There ia encouragement and
comfort for those in moderate dr
cuius tames, that though they may
not be able to give much, and conte
quently be despised by men, yet that
which they do give ia accounted of
more worth by the Master than the
large amounts given by many from
sinister motives. How rarely do we
find meu of menus giving accord mg
as God has prospered them. The
love of riches usually grows with the
addition of wealth, aud hence rt is a
very difficult matter for rich mem
bers to give according to tbeir ability.
The consequence is, that we And per
sons in moderate circumstam-es doing
more in this direction than wealthy
men, not because there are more of
this class simply, but because they
have not such au inordinate deem*
for the vain end fleeting things at
time and sense. “How hardly shall
they that have rfebee enter Into the
kingdom of heaven.” Why? Because
where much is given much will lie

have nothing to do with any Bynod

now ecclesiastical law in Prussia,
