We have now advanced tar «s»ough
to consider the form nf • church
Architects, I believe, have trtwd
every eonceivablV shape which can
possibly be given to a church cdtlm,
becauew the demand for something
new, something out of the usual wsy
of building * church ban taxed their
ingenuity. Thus it is that we have
octagonal and circular shaped chare!*
es, neither of which, so far, has found
favor with worslnpsrs, and I do not
think U likely to come into favor
on account of the difficulty of ar
ranging the seats. Mid another still
greater difficulty of properly placing
the minister, who i* to jureaH* to the
congregation.
The elliptical fcaln offers a very
pleasing effect, so far as the interior
is concerned, which, on account of
its perfect resonance, eiqwcialJy when
vaulted, is best calculated to convey
sound; yet the treatment of the exte
rior is so difficult, that I qaestien
tbs propriety of m-ommending it
for general use, exempt it were am-
trusted to the hands of a very skill
fnl artist. I have seen bnt one
church built after the elliptical plan,
and that is the one in which 1 re
reived Christian tmptism when an
infant, and when a yon lit relieved
my sponsors of their rcspnnaibilitl**
when 1 assumed them myself by
publicly pro!cawing Christ. My love
and predilection for that church is
readily accounted for, because 1 have
worshiped in it again ami again,
hoy© sat in all parts of the church,
as well below as on the gallery,
which ritps all around the church,
