StdlosdflA fit ktiaat* Search Reverend end Dear Brwiher t I taka ths liberty to furmeh you with a brief account of ths dedication of our German Lutheran church here in Alteata, which took place the flft of Novumbsr, as 1 am awaiw of the great interest with which you sod several of your readers bars watched from tha first the various efforts pot forth for tbs establishment of a La therua congregation aad tbs building of s Lutheran church ia this city. Ths first attempt waa nude ia IfifiA, by aa English Lutheran, Mr. Tigaer, aad a Gorman, Mr. Fioken, through tbs church people di a lion to ths destitute •tats of the members of tb«f Lotberan Church here. A number of minis ter were thus led to make inquiries,* but they kept aloof, when they learnt it was»altogether a new field. At last Rev. H. Hokum, of Nash villa, Tcon , came and preached to the Germans here about two years. Rat as he was Reformed and the coagrogatiou wished to be Lutheran, se foiled at that time probably through this want of agree meat. Tbs reel attempt to form a Lutheran congregation was therefore aot made until in August, 1871, by Rev. J. ileckel. 1 succeeded him, or 1 rather had to commence bis work anew, as 1 did aot arrive at Atlanta until at the clese of December, 1871. The trials aad diflkulliee, the inter nal aad ecterual obatactaa, that were encountered nod bad to be removed st last sew our little church completed and could dedicate it, 1 will ao: ae« enumerate; 1 pre- Mr to toll you and your readers ot the good time we had at onr dedica fob. After a rainy spell of several days, the jreather cleared ap beautifully, aad ou the day of tbs festival a re spectable oougrrgstioti composed of German* and Americans assembled in our little chatth, which seats comfortably about 300 persona. We opened the service* with the waging of B. Schmoike'* beautiful hymn: “That mir naf die seboeoe Pforte, foehrl in Gottos IIan* mich ein." Opm to me the beautiful pate, lend me into the tower of God. The 84th Psalm was then read, tbe sermon delivered, Another hymn rung, and thee Rev. J. Heckel and the pastor eolemnly dedicated the church. These services were all in German. There were, however, not a few present who only understood Hug- tisb, and it w^uuld bare been wrong te ellow them to depart unfed. The English brother, ubo had been in vited to be present, was, unfoitu aatoiy, prevented from at tend mg. There was therefore no help for it; my valued friend, Rev. 1’. Heckel, had to deliver an English, instead of a German sermon. But as on the previous Ronday, the Festival of tbe Reformattou had been celebrated, he, iu reference to it and baaed ou the 4fith Psalm, delivered a aerinon in which be pointed out to our Eng lish brethren how these words have also been fulfilled iu the history of our Lutheran Church, and dwelt especially on the three most impor tant days of the Reformation, namely: the 31st of October, 1317, the day of Worms, and the day of Augsburg, which may be called the day of tbe birth, the day ot the baptism, and the day of tbe <x>n Urination of oar church, and closed with ao appropri ate exhortation to faithful adherence to the Lutheran Ocnteaaioi and wor ship of God. An English choir kind If sang appropriate pieces before and sftoc the sermon. There non stands, my dear Broth er, what yon have long desired—a Lutheran church in Atlanta, and al though U can not, a* regard* mag intode and magoifence, compare it self with her tasters, the churches of .ither denominations, it, nevertheless, answers completely its purpose, and prodaoss both outside and inside a fovarable impression. Thus Mu* the Lord baa helped us! Let aa therefore look to him for help still! For there is still work to be dons, before wa can aay: Now tbe little church belongs to ns alone. Our circumstances made it impera tively necessary to dedicate tbs church before we bad met the obli gations contracted by its erection. We therefore have a burdensome ftfot, 3500-4600, resting on tbe little church. Donations and contribu lions ars consequently very accepta ble, and although the hard times hitherto prevented me from visiting yours and other Lotberan congrega tions in the Booth in the interest* of my small Hock, the adage remains true, “Aufges oben iat niebt aufgs- bobsc* postponed is not ftendoued. Ths congregation and church here are German, and tbe constitution expressly requires that both continue •och. We are, however, heartily williog aad ready to assist onr few English follow-believers here, that they, too, may have a congregation and divine worship. We will most cheerfully afford them the use of our church’ for this purpose; and I am confident that sow tbe|wisb your cor respondent from here expressed not long ago in tbe Yieitor, will be grati fied, and bis lament be silenced, as it will be now mneb easier to estab lish and baild ap an English Luth eran church in counectiou with the Germau Lutheran congregation. I present in conclusion my grateful acknowledgements for the assistance received from beoevoleut members belonging to tbe Southern General Synod. We received from tbe Ger man Lutheran church in Charleston, S. O., $24.20; from Mr. Geo. Leon hardt, Newberry C. U., S. €., $50; from Dr. Rode, Columbia, S. C\, $25; and from Rev. W. Eicbelberger, Wardeusville, W. Va., $1. With fraternal and affectionate greetings, sod the prayer that the Lord will build up his church in all places, with yoa and with us, I re main yoar brother in Christ, Th. Koeberlk. For tbe Lutheran Visitor. • Th* -Tixitcr." We are delighted to see resolu tions favoring tbe Yieitor being passed in almost every Synod and Conference in the Lutheran Church South. Tbe Yieitor is doiug its work. It is essential to tbe devel opment of Lutherauism iu our State as well as in others. Many have endeavored to condemn it, but its oppoeers bad just as well try to “stop the Nile with bulrushes, 7 * or lore and matrimony, as the circula tion of the Tintor. The Yieitor hav ing gone out in different parts of the country, tbe good effects it produces being felt by ao many, is compelled to go oa until it shall have accom plished tbe great object tor which intended. Its friendly rieite are wel comed by too great a uumber of onr people for it to perish. And, iu its head, (if be does scold at times be cause some are tardy in |*aying their subscription,) is too much general wit, beauty of lauguage, depth ef thought, aud hia heart ia too big and charitable for tbe |»aper to be other thau pleasant to any *rto knotc koir to appreciate a church paper. He is “the mao for the place 77 as has been acknowledged by moet of our minis ters. A better could not be fouud. It is uot to be expected, though, that be should be without euemies. Such a Ihiug would be absolutely uureasonable. If uoue save those who are without eiu would cast stones at the Editor, not a hair of his head would be hurt. He would pass through life unmolested and be appreciated in his honorable ca pacity. AH, uot one excepted, have tbetr share of enemies. But while some do oppose the paper aud the editor, we trust there are those who will labor for it In laboring for tbe paper we manifest a love for tbe ebureb—a desire to promote Lutheranism as well as the eauae of Christ generally. Let every minister urge bis jieoplc to take the Vwttor, and let every layman as wyll a* minister read i\ It will do good, it always eontaius something good. Reading tbe |>aper on Sunday is very pleasant We desire very much that tbe prejudices which have ruled the action of some with regard to tbe pajier, aud w hich have beeu a great barrier to the spread of Lutheranism in tbe old South State be removed. Let all uuite with oue heart aud one voice iu favor of tbe Yieitor, and we will bave a paper of which we need not be ashamed. What would we do without it! It is to the church what moisture is to the plaitt, and what the compass is to the seaman ! Such »<the paper to the church.
