A life of the blessed Redeemer,
which children will be able to under
stand and appreciate, has been a
long felt want in oar English church.
Mrs. 8. E. B.—we doubt very much
whether we are at liberty to give
the full name—proposes to write
such a life of Christ. May the Lord
give her health ami streugth to finish
her chosen task!
No time is ss appropriate as the
present to beg if* it Christinas Is on
the way. It will soon be here. Oar
children will then rejoice, bat that
th$y may rejoice as Christian children
require, they should know wall the
story of the birth of the heavenly
child.
We hope that “An Appeal 1 * will
be attentively lead by aft To mis
(donate—to preach the gospel to
those who do not know it, to make
conquests for the Lord, and to plant
churches—is the duty of the cbnreh,
sod her fife, her growth, her
perity, are inseparable from,
depend greatly, nay, entirely, on her
faithful performance of this duty.
The church, the people, the Christian
who has not a missionary spirit, has
not tho spirit of Christ
Oar Southern church has done as
yet bat Httle for the extension of
the church—nay, she has even frilled
in providing for those of her own
faith who have removed to localities
where the Evangelical Church bad
not yet built an altar. Ou« cause of
this remissues* is undoubtedly the
want of united effort. In union Is
strength. Only when our Southern
church abandons her
tional, and therefore more
inefficient, way of operating, can she
succeed in enlarging her borders.
Our best and wisest course would be
to direct our missionary efforts to
our cities. Through the cities the
country is secured. If we neglect
the cities, we lose the country. Let
us learn from and follow the exam
ple of the Apostles. Paul went from
city to city, from town to tows. Let
us unite oar scattered forces; let as
direct our labors to tbe stroogbohls;
let us operate through the Central
Committee.
Bible Society Meeting.
Last night tbe different congrega
tions ot ear “mountain city’ 1 met ia
the large Methodist church to seek
to inspire new interest in the Bible
cause in our midst. A few years
since we had a flourishing Bible
Society in our town, auxiliary to the
State Bible Society at Richmond,
which is, in torn, I believe, auxiliary
to tbe American Bible ifemtoty. From
some cause, however, ear interest
had flagged is this good work, sad
last year, from this wealthy county,
with a population of 30,000, oaly
sixty eight dollart were paid lot* the
treasury at Richmond. Our people,
therefore, determined that, while the
county might be delinquent; ear
enterprising, sad always ready for
every good work, town
rest under this stain any
The meeting, therefore, of |
tiigbt was largely attended by the
pastors and laity of the various Pro
testant churches of Staunton, and
quite a sum of money raised for the
cause, considering these hard times.
More, however, would have beau rais
ed had not the managers fallen into a
mistake sonoinmon at this day.
