Job, tfca Pittat Kail
“Mother, the catechism says that
‘Job was tbe moat patient man.'
Who waa Job, mm! why wan ha no
patient V said Henry B.
His mother replied, "I will relate
tbe history of Job to yon, with
«re. Job was a patriarch of tba
moat ancient times spoken of in the
Bible. He lived m the land of Ua,
a portion of the northern part of
Arabia Desert*, and had vary great
possessions, consisting of ffsako,
herds, lands and money, besides a
large family of children. Job was a
rich man. He sincerely sad truly
loved God and served Him with a
perfect heart. God loved Job, and
the Bible relates that one day, when
the sons of God came before Him to
relate the results of their erraada of
love amongst the inhabitants of tba
earth, that Satan, who also i* at all
times walking op and down in the
earth, seeking to work some of his
mischief, came also to hear what the
soon of God reported. God naM to
Satan, ‘Whence contest thou T and
he answered, 'From going to and fro
is the earth, aad from walking up
and down in it.’ Theu the Lord
said, ‘Have yon seen tny servant Job,
that them Is nobody like him, a per
fect and upright man, one that
eth God and will oot commit evil F
‘I have seen him,' said Satan. ‘He
doss sot obey yoo so well for nothing
He has lands and wealth aad good
health, and b# is blessed ; hot if you
pot forth your hand and tooch him
be will corse yoo.' The Lord
swered to Satan, ‘Behold all that
Job has is in your power, only yoo
shall not tooch him.’ ”
“Why did the Lord give Satan
power over Job, mother T
“Because God knew Job's heart,
and knew that the Devil waa a liar,
and that Job wonld be fa
and perfect in his affliction. Well, so
Satan was greatly delighted, aad he
went to the earth in haste, and by
various means be owed all the
children of Job to die a endden and
violent death. He canted fire to
come from tbe sky and bora up tbe
flocks and servants. He stirred up
the Chaldeans to foil upon the camels
and their drivers and destroy them
all, and incited tbe Sabeans to fall
upon tbe oxen and asses aad the
servants who were using them, and
they Mew the servants and took the
animals away. When Job heard of
tbe loss of his property and tbe ter
rible death of his sons and daugh
ters, be .arose and real his mantle,
shaved his hair off, as a mark of
de«)»e*t grief, and fell apon tbe
ground, and in bis deep sorrow all
be replied was, ‘The Lord gave, tbe
Lord hath taken away, and Messed
be the name of tbe Lord.' 1 *
