Reverend and Dear Brother : I have received your esteemed letter, which presents the ptospects of obtaining aid from a source from which I hard ly ventured to look for it. I intend ©d some time ago to write yon, but I did not, because I believed that in the circles in which you and your paper move but little iutereat would be felt iu the establishment of German Lutheran church hi Atlanta. Your friendly tetter has taught me the coutrary. It will soon be two years since I came to Atlanta, and i have passed through much on this oat post. Of ten all hope seemed gone. More than once it was said that our con gregation was dead. But*now a small Lutheran church will before long, through God’s help, be com pleted in Atlanta, when we will be able to sing the “Eighty-fourth Psalm.” The account of our congregation, which yon read in theAYrdtaiAfott of my Synod, had been delayed. We already have commenced the building of our church. True we have only about half of the amount required, but we could not pot It off any longer; the existence of the congregation depended on it Any assist ance is very acceptable, ♦•specially now toe are building, as we havo constant use for money. If it is possible for you to send us the amount mentioned iu your letter, it would afford us great help just now. Your invitation to visit you in Co lumbia I will not fail to jproAt froth. As to the time when, I will let you know. I wilt be detained here by my school untO the close of this month, and will then, God willing, visit my old friend, the Rev, Johan lies Heckel, in Knoxville, when ho aud I propose to attend the Conven tion of the Bolston Synod. At the close of Septcmjber I might visit you and the brethren in Augusta, Savannah and Charleston. It will be exceedingly interesting to me to become acquainted through you with the Southern Lutheran Church, which in many respects differs from the Northern Church. If able to send us the money men tioned in your ltoter, please do it either by a check* r money orders. In Iwpo to become before long per The above letter has a history, sod we will relate it. Lo all that pertains to its iuterests, whether financial, educa tional, or missionary, It is fairly awake. In the work of education, U gives its support to Roanoke Col lege and Htauuton Female Seminary. And in proof of iU ad besiou to tbe school of tbe prophets, aud iu determinfiliou to support it, not only with mesa* but with stu deuu, it clearly uttered iu diaappro ballon of the coarse pursued by those of iU candidates tor the minis try, who, in disregard of iU recom usemlsUous, prosecuted their studies, whether classical or theological, at other schools than those located at Haleru. Whether any legislation was enacted, looking to tbe esUblish went of another chair of theology, we are not advised (we were under the necessity of leaving before the adjournment of Syuod); but that this impartaut matter will receive the sttentiooof tbe Virginia Hynod as soon as Itdeewmit practicable, we do not entertain a doubt.
