Ir. Mathias Barra died at New
€L H., on Sunday, April the
27tb, after a lingering illness about
Months, in hia 74U. j«r.
Thk Herald in an editorial observe*:
No more useful citizen, or inora
beloved, for hia many eatimabl*
traiti of character, ever lived tbaa
the deceased; and the many troubles
which chme thick aud fast on him
in the latter days of bis life, and
which helped to prostrate hia ener
gies and make him wish for the end
which would bring him peace, touch
ed a sympathetic chord in the hearts
of all who knew him. In the sudden,
untimely death of His dearly beloved
son, John J. Barre, it might be said
he received his death stroke, for be
never recovered from it, nod later
that ©f Bev. W. Berley, his brother-
in-law, no doubt helped to hasten
the severance of the golden chord at
life. It may well be said hia trou
bles were many. During his late
iUnesB his pains were great, but be
bore them all with Christian forti
tude, and under the sympathizing,
loving attentions of hia devoted
family. Mr. Barre has left a food
wife, sous and daughters, and nomer-
nfm is eternal gain, for he Mad, it ia
a pleasure to say, in the full assur
ance Of a future happy life. May be
rest in peace.
To this handsome testimony by
one *ho knew him well, we would
add, that in the death of Bra Barrs
the chnrch of Christ mourns a true,
devoted and active servant of the
Lord.j He loved Zion, he delighted
to praise Qod in his sanctuary, he
was always ready with wise counsel
and large-hearted liberality to pro
mote her welfare, the ministers of
Christ were always welcome at hia
cheerful fireside and hospitable board,
and we and many others when re
calling his kind and pleasant ways
feel that we have indeed lost a friend
and a brother who loved us, whom
we loved much, and whom we will
rejoice to meet in the better land.
We know that be believed in Jesus,
and we therefore sorrow not even as
others which have no hope. He
rests in peace!

Thinking that a fow days awn;
