Wuxi am Berley, aged 83 years,
4 months, 33 days, in the full aaaur
auce of faith. We were with him
on Sunday and on Monday, expected
to ace him again on Thursday, and
would have witnessed hie departure,
bat that illness keeps us a close pris
oner. It was a comfort to hear him
speak of Jesus, it imparted new
strength to our faith to lists a to hie
confession, and hie fervent “Amen*
filled our soul with glad hope.
The Lord sanctify As death of
His saints to His brethren in the
ministry; the people he labored
among) the wife, the sou anti family
who mourn their loss!

about the decoration of oar church
on Easter Sunday. A geutlemau
quite sheered os by remarking that
our young people had displayed re
fined taste and artistic judgment in
dressing the sanctuary.
The Communion was large and
solemn. Among the communicants
were three—father, mother, and
daughter—the latter we confirmed
on 1-18ter, 1807, who in a few days
will return to the old home in Qer-
inauy, to remain there.
When we left the church, we were
at once hurried into a carriage to go
and baptize a sick child. This done,
we bad hardly reached the street be
fore tiro gentlemen took possession
of os, carried us to the Charlotte
Depot, pat as on the train, and away
we went to Lexington, twelve mites
distant from Columbia.
In Lexington we found mourning
in every household, almost Their
pastor, Rev. W. Berley, is very sick
with typhoid pneumonia; ia one
house in the village a little child lay
pale and cold in death’s embrace; in
another, a young wife, a bride of six
weeks, was wept by husband, parents
and kindred; and in a third boose,
a youug colored woman bad just da
parted. Lexington village had n^ver
kept such a Lord’s day before.
On Monday, the little child and the
yoang bride were both carried to the
house of God, and after the usual
services, friends whispered the last,
sad, tearful farewell, and the little
child gas first buried, and then the
handmaid of the Lord. We are
happy and grateful that we can call
her the Lord’s handmaid. She con
fessed Jesus before men, and she be
lieved on Him. Though yoeng,
though loved, though many strong
ties had to be severed, she was ready
to obey her Lord. She charged her
husband and mother to follow her to
heaveq; and when no louger able to
whisper, she, when asked if she still
trusted in Jesus, feebly pointed with
her trembling finger upward toward
heaven.
We returned home Monday eve
ning, and now we are very uawell—
indeed, sick. It is hard work to write
when unable to sit op lor any length
of time, and it is difficult to collect
thoughts and to find words when

look all present shortcomings of the

pulpit itself was covered with white
cloth forming a pure ground which
brought out to view the shields and
wreaths fixed ojkhi each face. (The
pulpit ia in tte form of a half octa
gon.) The altar, aprog^ as a table
for eommuuiou, was covered with
aaowy white, having iu front the
inscription, L H. B. The chancel
was eatwioed with vines and bios
some, and on either aide of tte altar,
where tte chancel rail terminated,
stood a basket tedened with sweet
ness with an exquiaite little ham
ming bird pendant from the handle
of each basket. Between the pillars
supporting tte galleries, were heavy
maaaawc garlands baoging low, and
tied together in tte centre, while
from tte ends hoog tassel* of pine,
baring above these, wreaths hung
upon tte gilt lamp* and boqueta of
freahout flowers In the shades.

The services of the day were open
ed by the aweet music for which our
volunteer choir is so well esteemed,
aad a special chant suited to the
occasion was rendered, after which
tte service was conducted by the
pastor in accordance with the Book
of Worship. The discourse was one
of those earnest, solid and effective
effort* which wc have been taught
to look for, from tte text Oor. 15th
chapter, vetoes 55th, 58th and 57th.
