\Ye all desire to impart such joy
today as shall be everlasting j we
desire to tooch a chord which shall
make sweet melody unto the Lord
whilst life shall last on earth, and
tboreughout the life everlasting in
heaven. Therefore we hAve selected
os a text or motto, the words of St.
Paul, aa found iu the first half of the
4th verse of the 4th chapter of his
letter to the FhiUipiaus, in which be
exhorts them to “Rejoice in the
Lord always." Tbi* was not only
a wish of St. Paul's, but a command
from God, teaching the Phiilipian
rhrtotaana that it was both their
duty apd privilege to rejoice—to be
happy always, that is at all times
and in every place; that although
they might have many trouble* from
the wicked heathen around them,
lb<-y should rejoice in the Lord.
They might be in fear of losing their
lit es (tor in those days many cliris-
tutu* had to die for their love to
Jesu* Christ). Though they bod to
lose their liberty or property, they
*bould still rejoice iu the Lord. Now,
children, we have the same reasons
for rejoicing that they had, and some
which they did not have, aud there
same wonls of Paul are addressed to
na as truly as they were to the Phil*
lipian Christians. But whst is it to
rejoice ? It means nothing less than
to lie very glad, and in our hearts to
t*e very happy, and to show it more
or ieus. We are very apt to show
in our faces aud by our movement*
when we are happy. We can geu
eralty read joy or sorrow iu each
o(h'*r”s faces—capecially iu the faces
of the young. For it docs uot take
a great deal to make us happy iu
childhood. A kiud word, a pleasant
look from teacher or parent, a little
promenade, a short ride, or the aim
pleat gift as a token of kindness,
will rnu up the pul res of our joy
more promptly than the mercury in
