[&riWi for January. **n—-onmmmmmmmmmmmm Miscellaneous. Veanino of Order What is thin wonderful enchanter called order t What, exactly, do ws mean by it f If we look into it more narrowly, we shall find that it implies the separation, division, and diotribu tion of things according to their qualities, iu certain definite well cal culated times and spaoem. Number and measure are the essence of it. The sands of the desert can not be numbered ; at least not by us)-rela tively to our faculties they are mere chaos; but the soldiers of a well ordered army, arranged in rank and file, can be uurabered, and their thou- sands told with os much eaae as the units of a small sum, if onlj the ar rangements be completed. Ho then order consists iu dividing a confused multitude of individual elements into groups that bear a natural reeetn blance to one another in kind, in number, and in measure. A aqnad of fail-growu soldiers, fire in front and three in depth, tike the band of t be old Grtsk chons ta aariaot order; each unit being like the other, and the whole being composed of parts that bear a definite relation of equality or proportion to the whole ; the many under the controlling pow er of order have become one, and with that nnity have acquired a dis tinct character, aod are capable of answering a definite pmrpoae. This, and this only, ta the difference between an avalanche of shattered rooks on the storm-battered sides of Mount Blanc or Ben Moc-Dbai, and the stable piles of the Memphian pyramids, or the chaste columns of the Parthenon; between what the great Scotch poet paints as— “Crags, jLnolk, mxl mounds, confusedly The fragments of an earlier world,” aud the beautiful proceoaioo of things which Moees describes as marehinfc forth into existence at the Ant of the Omnipotent.—Profttor Btmekie. ■ '■■■■ i ffp * ■ »> The Frozen Welle of Brandon. About a mile Southeast of Bran dos, Vermont, there is situated a well forty-one feet deep, the water of which has tbs peculiarity of remain ing frozen all the year mood. Ia 1860 the owner of the property began the usual excavations for water. After passing through four feet of and ten foet of toil, a bed nf gravel, sixteen feet ia thick ness, was encountered, which rapidly changed to mud when exposed to heat. Further digging penetrate* another bed of elay, aod finally i layer of clean gravel, in which water was found. As the Winter months approached, ice began to form iu the well, at the rate of from two to four inches over night, white during the succeeding Summer, though the well remained open, an occasional skim of ice would appear on the surface. Eventually the well was abandon ed, hut since it has remained unused it J* found that if the Winter ice is uot removed when the weather ia quite warm, the water remains fro zen through the hottest month*. 1 taring April last, tee twenty inches In thickness was taken out, bat as the atmosphere at that time was chilly, freezing again took place. On Jnly 16th, of this year, the tempera ture In the shads was 85 degree*; at two foet from the surface of the tee in the well the mercury sank to 33 degrfiM. ]SJp(: ; A ' In I860 four shaft* were sunk In immediate proximity to the well without striking froaen ground; a fifth endeavor waa more aweceesfol, but the experiment was never com peted, though we learn that it will be oo<« more undertaken next Hum Uler. ; There ia considerable specula a* to why this peculiar locality, poaatMy two in from twelve to twenty ala* day aad gravel, aad Am* a k^l III flteH foot me*linnet! ia th* llibte, whtoh the mederu mew of mmm aft wg ling to admit te <«»»Armed hf the and yet uot affect any other spot *unth, of the Bntteh composed of similar strata Fufi. the —batted moot •or Huger i» of opinion that the ph« r—mt of the reoard of nousenon te due to glacial remain*, which he k«a total) The bed* of clay whir fa tnteruwpt the th.
