The Palestine Emigration Polly.—
The Jeteish Times of last week
makes mention of the return of Prof.
Grata and Messrs. Levy, PoUin ami
Gottschalk from Palestine. Their
report is set down as “an additional
argument against the folly of en
couraging the emigration of tbe
Jews to a country which has no
other claim than that of a venerable
monument of tbe past.” There are
now, it appears, about 16,0(10 Jews
living in Palestine, and “their aver
age state of culture is much lie low
that of their fellow religiooists iu
Europe. They have do visible means
of support, speud their time in
idleness, playing and Talmud read j
ing, and foolish pining and singing
on the ruins of the Temple, eking
out a miserable existence by tbe
charity of the Jews of Europe,
America and Australia.” Tbe me
mortal of tbeir visit by Prof. Grata
and his companions suggests “the
general elimination from all Jewish
prayer-books of tbe portions refer
ring to the hopes of Israel iu the
restitution of tbe lloly Land to tbe
possession of Israel and tbe rebuild
ing of tbe Temple by Divine I*rovi-
deuce. The Time* considers it not
ouly a folly, but a crime, to feed the
sickly imagination of poor, ignorant
|>eople by tbe hallucination; as if
one spot on earth hail a greater
value in the eyes of God, ami prayers
sent up to Heaven from a certain
locality find sooner a hearing from
tbe Throne Divine.”
The Christian Leader (Uni versa] iat),
believes in vigorous preaching. It
says:
The pulpit must iusist that the
disease of the world is not upoti its
skin, bnt in its blood ; and that men's
principles must be revolutionized,
and their convictions changed, be
fore these evils which it is promised
to reform can jMissibly be swept away.
It is therefore the legitimate business
of those who preach what Christ
revealed, to attack and eradicate the
errors and falsities from which those
abuses and wrongs proceed. The
reform which Christianity demands
eau only be secured by the preva
lence and imwer of truth. Does the
truth hit and hurt f PreachingInnst
have some sharp points or nobody
will be pricked. Agitation is one of
the conditions of life and growth.
The days of controversy in the
church have been among iu purest
days; and if auy man quarrels with
preaching because it is aggressive
and sharp, he is a weak and timid
disciple, who forgets that Jesus came,
not to send peace on earth, but a
sword.
Sprinkling Comes From Hen sen.—
Dr. Cox was going out of my church
one evening, and there was a shower
of rain * falling outside, and tbe
people were therefore detained at
tbe doors, and did not pass out as
rapidly as usnal; and he said to a
distinguished clergyman of the Bap
tist denomination, then in Pierrepont
8t., who was walking ont with him :
“Brother, what is tbe reason of
this delay f
“I think,” answered tbe other,
“there is a shower outside.*
“Ah !” said the doctor, “there are
qnit© a number of your persuasion
here; they ought not to lie afraid
of the water.”
“No,” said tbe brother, “it is not
the water, but the sprinkling, that
they are afraid of.”
“Ah!” said Dr. Cox, “I know
they are afraid of that; and yet it
comes from heaven.”--/ter. Or,
Storrs.
