The Cincinnati Nomination.—

FIRST DAY.
Synod met in St. John's Church,
Charleston, S. C., Thursday, May
10th, at 10 o’clock A. M. It being
Aacensiou Day, Synod, together with
the congregation composed of mem
bers of the Lutberau churches in
the city, united iu the proper ob
servance of the day. Rev. D. M.
Gilbert opened the services accord
ing to our established form, the
pastor of St John’s atteuded to the
Order of Coufossiou, and Kev. Dr.
Rude to the consecration of the
elemeuts of the Sacrament of the
Lord’s Supper; after which the
communiou was administered.
After the administration of the
Sacrament, Synod was called to
order by Rev. S. Repast, Rev. J.
Cupp acting as Secretary pro tern.

There has beeu a good deal of dia

past few year* upon tbe subject of

the litiernlity of our |**ople, baa ea-
gaged the attention of Synods and
Conference*, and we would fain
hope, that the interest awakened, has
bee* very generally carried down to
our membership, but here we are
iu grave doubt. Too many minis
ters are content to make speeches at
oar ecclesiastical assemblies, {mss
resolutions, aud then sink dowu into
a comatose state, from which they
do not awaken until tbe next annual
meeting. Something, however, has
been done, and we rejoice that the
iuterrst ip onward and progreaaive.
The cry - of the church for system,
in gathering regularly into the store
bonne the tithes which are the Lord**,
is the harbinger of a brighter day.
It proclaims tbe charch sites, push
mg, enterprising, with keea eyes
fixed upon a peri*biug world, seek
ing to save it by preaching, by mis
sioos, by tracts and ltook*, by arbools
and colleges; and soch a lire chnrch
w1U always be asking for moocy,
and seeking to deviae the beat poasi

Be that as it may, any reflecting
mind will diaoern great wisdom in
that system which demands fre
quent and repeated acts of benevo
lence, because of the habits of self
discipline which such a plan eooour

been fixed—little has been secured,

membership are poor or illiberal, but
because there has been no uniform
and general system practiced.
3. The “Box System" reaches all. ’Lord, one faith, one
Paul says, “Let every one of you lay
by him in store, as God bath prosper
ed him.” The old system (I shall rather
say ao system) baa been found sadly
defective. It is that of special ap
peals for specific objects, just as tbe
urgency of the case is pun gently felt
Tbe preacher becomes a clamorous
beggar, tolls bis tale of sorrow, whee
dles, cajoles, and even shames bis peo
ple luto giving, if be sooceeds at all.
Suppose be succeeds. In every such
appeal tbe harvest ia gathered from
the feu, while St. Paul tells ns that
“every ouo” should give. And worse
than that, the few who give, give
spasmodically—fitfully, and are con
firmed iu an unhealthy exercise of
doty . Christ tell* us that “it is more
