hatefulneaa of ala, awl the great
wrath of God against our iIm, which
could not be appealed by the virtues
or merits of men, but only by the
death of the Boo of God himself.
The Sou of God did not institute
Ilia owu Supper, that we aiight
think lightly of ain, and by ita nae
lie continued in our intention to sin,
aa if license fur crime were there
received, so that without the fenr
of God, without contrition and con
version, we might preeerete in sins
against conscience. Whoever comes
to the Lord's Supper with such an
opiuion, by that very act casts con
tempt upon the Lord's body, ami
increases hia former sins by thk still
more terrible offense.
111. To a worthy reception of the
lamPti Supper, faith is especially
necessary. For in it, the Son of
God, by the presentation of His body
and blood, offers, ap}4foa, and seals
the forgiveness of sin, ami all the
blessings of the New Testament.
This promise requires faith, not only
to determine tu geueral that those
things are tme which God of disown
grace, on account of the merit of the
Mediator, promises, but, particularly,
tiecansc in the Lord's Hopper, God
by a special act bears witness that
He wishes to receive, into the (tun
munion of His body and blood, every
one partaking, and that He wishes
to coinuiDiiicate Himself to each one,
and to give, apply, and seal to him
the blessings of the New Testament.
Faith, therefore, is necessary in seek
ing aud receiving these blessings, so
that each one can determine that the
promise belongs to him, and that it
is there communicated, applied, and
sealed to him. in the bestowal of that
most precious pledge, the body sod
blood of Christ. This ia a true re
membrance of Christ. In the words
of institution, Christ says to each
communicant: “Take, this is My

this is the New Testament ia My

There, also, waa the chair in which

in troth, a big joss bonne ; aa idol

not the worse image-bonne in Rome ;
but it was bad enough, and what

Lagmen'e Obligations.—The Episco
pal>am, in speaking of the Church,
say* : I-ay men have something mote
than a mere incidental or accidental
interest in the practical works of
Christ's Church. Mission work is
their work. Ministers of the Gospel
are their servants aa well as the
servants of Christ. They can not
perform their duties without means,
and the means can come only from
the laity. The merchant, the bank
er, tbe capitalist and other men of
business most endeavor to realise
that, with reference to the ever press
ing necessities of mission work, they
carry “<Jk Ck srdF* is their pockets.

2,700 parishes. Tbe parish list for
1871 gives 753 vacant. Tbe net gain of
the clergy in 1871 waa only 62, being

of God, in instituting this Sapper,
a liar. So also those who come
without faith, not thinkiog what
they seek or wbat they receive; and
those who come with the epienrean
opinion that they thereby obtain

This is undoubtedly the true pre
