in this ago, which arc exactly the
opposite of the two maiu principle*
governing the lteformation in the
sixteenth oeutury, aud so dearly ea
forced by the Apostle In the text.
The oue is to take everything that
exists in the preeeut form of chriati
unity without examination or proof,
utterly ignoriug the importance uf
doctrine, and makiug no effort to dis
criminate between the true and the
false. This daaa of peraoua ears
nothing about creeds, they say, or
denominational peculiaiitiea, or
churches. They claim to have a
higher and better spiritual expert
euce; oue that does not depend upon
doctrines, but ream upon inward ooo-
sciousnesa, affectiou, sentiment and
feeling. They are for union, they
say. The union of all upon the
basis of love to Jesus, aud a deal re
to go to heaveu. It is not essential
with them to determine exactly who
•uid what Jeans was, whether a com
inou man, an extraordinary mao, a
prophet, a martyr, a philanthropist,
or a divine being equal with God aud
oue with God. They can love him
all the same. Aud it is not essential
with them what way a man taken to
get to heaven; whether the way of
the Bible, or the way of reason and
nature. All that is wanted is a re
ligious sentiment, aud sentiment is
their religion. Bat such a religion
is not divine, it is purely human. It
is a purely subjective emotion, onto
ml to man; a shadow without a sub
stance ; a form without life; a name
without a power. Christianity is a
system of doctrine*, well defined and
marked, every oue of them essential;
not one to be omitted, or lightly
esteemed, aud so perfect that not
another one dare be added to the
number. '"As such it has triumphed
and revolntionised the word, iuangn
rating the kingdom of God upon
earth. And when this is set aside
for a mere seutimeutalism, the pre
cious holies inspired by the Gospel
will perish$ and all that feed npon
such pleasing phautasies will perish
with them. Ajas! that we most de
clare this to be the po|*ilar religion
of the age, and that in warning yon
against it we must suffer the opposi
tion of the prevalent opinions around
us, ami stand in the current as a bar
rier to resist its ouwaid sweep to tb©
