From this, therefore, it is easy to
answer Satan; 1 bear very well the
frightfril words which you utter:
Christian Church and Holy Ghost,

But this, also, I want to hear: What
and who is the Christiau Church f
Ou this poiut let us be agreed, that
we may understand the matter. Ah 1
you say: I mean the Pope of Borne,
cardinals, bishops, doctors, holy fa
thers, when they come together and
decide concerning any matter. Yea,
the devil thank thee, who bids thee
to apply this glorious name, whioh
should properly be held in reverence
by all, to such fbols-play ; as to what
a man ia to eat or to driak upon this
or that day, or h<^w long a bishop’s
cloak, or how broad a monk’s cap is
to be, aod^bow high or low a seat
auy one shall occupy. Is this Christ's
word—Christ’s ordinance? Or Ad
ever be or his apostles say one word
aliout such things.
You see, consequently, that these
knaves are doubled-tougued. They
take the words, Holy Ghost, church,
aud apply them to their trifles, and,
meantime, dou’t teach one word of
that which Christ has spokeu aud
commanded, yea, teach and do |>re-
cisely the contrary; and, under the
uarne of Chrisinuid the Holy Ghost,
lead the people away from Christ
and the Holy Ghost. Christ has not
said that I must receive and believe
all that which popes, cardinals and
bishops determine; bat I am to hear
the Christian Church, which hits the
Holy Ghost from the Father, sent in
the name of Christ, who teaches her
nothing else than that which he has
said: Such she is to be, and by Ibis
I am to know her. Thus, like au
imposter, you take this name and
apply it to a knavish school, which
never cares to ask what Christ has

spirits. But if we take a right view
of this passage and the like of it, we
cau very well judge aud reject every
thiug which is oootrary to it.
Or let them bring what they will, I
know well what my Lord Chnst says,
and, consequently, what I am to
believe, if one come, then, and pre
scut anything to me os taught or
revealed by the Holy Gboet, I keep
to the word aud hold It up to this
doctrine, as to the true loach stone.
If now 1 see that it agrees with what
Christ says, i receive it as right and
good. But if it be a departure from
it, or would produce something dif
ferent from it, then I say: Thou art
not the Holy Ghost, but the detesta

iu no other uome than that of Christ,
and teaches nothing other than what
the Lord Christ has said. Thus, if
we will only remain with this word,
aud retain this passage truly and
purely, and know that the Holy
Ghost does not bring bumsu non
sense and trifles, but great and earn
eet matters, that is, Christ and his
gifts, then can we boldly rely upou
it, and conclude ou the one bond,
that we, who hare Christ, are holy
before God, and have the Holy
Spirit over against ail other and self
chosen holiness; and, on the other,
we con protect and guard ourselves
against all error and false spiritual

“Whether my word ia

from this word or not agreeable to
it, then that which teaches it is not
the Christian Church ; for how should
the church over come to this, that

as she did in former times when she

This is deciding iu the right way,
as the Christian Church should de-

cide; and such a decision we should
keep and obey. But whatever is
different, such as dress, diet, aud
outward display, that is not deter
mined in this way ; for it is not from
Christ’s word, but from the jiope’s
owu caprice. Here, then, whatever
they may order, the church has no
thing to do with it. For what God’s
word teaches, and w bat the Chris
tian Chnrcb determines—that be
longs not to this world, but to the
life to come; and for this reason,
must proceed not from our bead, but
from above, from Christ, and most
be accordiug to his commaudment.
But now while we have preserved
this text against the papal faction,
there come from another side other
spirits, and say, they are they who
