This portiou of the country* is
adapted to the culture of cotton,
but more especially of the cereals,
aud the various kinds of fruit.. Ap-
lies and quinces grow here in abun
dance, and are of a large size. The
people generally are what may be
called “good livers,” and raise an
abundance of provisions, both ani
mal aud vegetable.
The business of Synod aud the
exercises of the Sabbath being over,
we took au affectionate leave of each
other aud returned to our respective
daces, awaiting the time for us to
commence our journey home want.
It being important to meet the con
nection ou the Macon and Western
road from Atlanta to Macoii, it was
uecessary that we should leave
before day on Monday nforning. The
ireliminaries being agreed upon, we
retired to rest ou Sunday night, and
after a short sleep we arose and pre
pared for our journey. By 2 o’clock
A. M. we were on our way to Atlanta,
if not in the same vehicle, at least in
one of the same kind, taking with
us a good supply of provisions for
the “inner man.” At 6 o’clock we
stopped, made ready for breakfast,
aud fed our uoble lieast*. After
breakfast we resumed our journey
aud arrived at Atlauta in full time
dr the train; leaving the delegate
from South Carolina to take the
uight train for Augusta, we took our
seats in the Macon train. Fortu
nately for us, a favorable response
was made by the General Agent, to
our letter, and we passed buck free.
Having paid full fare on our way up.
For which this generous compauy,
also the others from whom we
received the same courtesy, have onr
sincere thanks.
We arrived in Macon at loj
o’clock P. M., took sup|H*r, lodging
aud breakfast at the Browne House,
and at 8 o’clock we parted, some on
the C. K. R., and others on the S. W.
li. R, aud it is hoped that all
arrived safely home that evening,
being just one week from <mr first

We can merely give the slightest
glance at these things, and simply
wish to direct your attention to
them, and hope yon will become so
interested that you will not be aatis
fied until you are perfectly familiar
with the history of your church.
Yon should study your catechism
careftilly, aud learn what doctrines
are contained in this celebrated
Augsburg Confession, and have them
explained to you by yoor teachers
and iiarentu, in order that you may
also understand what la taught in
yourowu church. It ia discredits
ble not to do this, and shows great
.indifference upon a most momentous
subject. A few days ago, I saw a
Presbyterian catechism marked as
the joint property of a Lutheran and
a Methodist Sunday school, and it
looked as If they had united to show
special contempt to the denomina
tions to which they professed to
beloug.
You are aware, probably, that this

We intended going more largely Into

Bnt liberty of conscience was at

commanded by the Pope ami the
Emperor to renounce their errors
and return as penitents to the bosom
of the church, and were threatened
with the most severe punishments if
they refused to do »o. If the church
had been willing to recognize the
doctrines which they promulgated as
true, and would have allowed them ;
to continue the dissentinatiou of
them, and to conduct their worship
according To their ideas of right,
they would gladly have remained
within her communion, for they were
not yet sufficiently convinced of her
apostate character to suppose her
beyond all reformation, and they
naturally disliked and dreaded leav
ing the visible organization which
was supposed to be the Catholic
Church for so many centuries ; and,
although they cheerfully resolved to
bear all the J persecution to which
they might be exposed in conse
quence, it was extremely painful to
contemplate in anticipation the war
fare and bloodshed that they could
not help but see would be an inevi
table result
So they prepared a confession, or
summary of the doctrines that they
believed to be taught iu the Bible,
and presented it at the Diet of Augs
burg, June 30, 1530, to the Emperor
and their other papal enemies, as
the basis of a compromise or settle
ment of their difficulties. Those
who were familiar with their Bible
could not help but know that it con
tained nothing but the truth therein
taught, but the papists so exalted
the churwli and the Pope above all
Scriptural teochiugs, that everything
which did not fully accord with
what they declared to be the truth,
was denounced as heresy. Conse
quently no reconciliation could lie
effected between them, because the
Protestants dared uot relinquish the
truth which wus taught them iu so

The charges that the Lutheran
Church bolds the doctrine of con nub

reiterated aud again denied, for cm
turies. Dr. Krauth in bis new work,
and Prof. Fritschel in an article in
the Momatahefte, have recently shown,
