Sabbath. Oor last pastor gave of
fence to some by expostulating with
them for such things. We have
some who are so constituted that
they always see things the wrong
side up, and they read the Bible so,
but are just as honest, so far as we
know, v>as anybody. We can not
afford to drive them away. We
have some who do not like too plain
and searching sermons—sermons
that awaken their consciences and
arouse their fears. Our last pastor
was not very popular with this olass.
They want something pleasant on
the Sabbath. We have some who
are dependent in their trade or occu
pation upon infidels and saloon
keepers, of which we have a large
number. They will stay away If the
pastor announces his intention to
preach on the sin of Sabbath break
ing or intemperance.
But you see what we w-ant—a mao
that will preach the truth. We can
bear it if it is so piesented as to
please all. But tee mwjf hart our
church tilled. Yours for pleasing sin

arrived in Bombay in January.
Many laborers had been compelled
to leave the field by sickness during
the year. The most Ituportaut event
of the year iu Western India was the
formation of a Christian alliance of
native pastors, teachers and mission
aries.
Kev. Dr. Lawri, of Rhode Island,
reported on Madeira Mission. Bev.
Mr. Noyes, for twenty-three years a
missionary at that station, said there
'wero twenty-eight churches, and 1,400
members, with 700 candidates for
church membership under probation
in the mission. Ue called earnestly
for more men.
Rev. Dr. Eddy, of Norfolk, Conn.,
reported ou the Central Turkey Mis
siou. 'The fact that the natives badr
giveu $8,000 for a new college at
Manesh, was mentioned. Rev. Dr.
Stroug presented a report of Euro
pean Turkey. They rejoice at the in
terestiug character of the new field
of Belgravia, ami at the success of
other missions in Turkey, including
2,000 people added to churches du
ring the past year.
A meeting of the Woman’s Board
♦as held last uight in the Taberna
cle, and was largely attended. Mrs.
Homer Bartlett, Treasurer announced
contributions since January to the
amount of $26,000. The report of
Western Woman's Board auuotiuced
$8,ooo as the receipts, and the aaxili-
ary societies throughout the West
numbered 104.

South Carolinian, Secretary; and
Rev. N. Wert, from uever mind,

ring the year scarcely equalled the
losses by death, removals, am! other
causes. The contributions were also
much below those of former years.
A resolution was passed requesting
the board to purchase the Observer,
And make it the property of the
General Synod. A committee was
appointed to meet committees from
the New York aud Franckeou Synods
to form a basis of union, aud to call
a convention of the three Synods.
The use of the box system was
favorably reported on.

The Box System.—The First Eng

introduced the box system on July
1st, aud have given it a fair trial.
The first quarter having closed, the
boxes have been opened, aud ou
Sunday eveniug last the pastor an
nounced the result. The number of
boxes opened was 201, aud their con
tents aggregated something over
$420.00, being an average of $2.(J9£
per box. The plan has proven a
grand success iu this instance, for
the quarter’ll contributions amount
tq more than oue-half the sum usu

the congregation. The pastor ex
pressed his gratification at the result,
aud encouraged his hearers to be
equally liberal duriug the eusuing

Foreign Missions.—Salem, Oct. 5.—
The session of the Ainericau Board
of Foreign Missions was to-day main
ly occupied in receiving reports.
Judge Taylor, of Canandaigua, New

the EpisoofNil Missionary Society ill
Dakota. He was fully oouvinced
that the great mass of that couimuu-

had been dene. It was caused by
zeal, without knowledge, on the part
of their missionaries. It was not
pleasaut thus to eeusure a sister
