THE LUTHERAN VISITOR. COLUMBIA. S. C. ( OCTOBER 20 1871 look, aa if the world bed failed to satisfy them. Only in the faces of the Tory young or the true Christian, who realises that “ we have do abiding city here," do we see cheer fulness and happiness. Society seems to be entirely upset. What used to be right, now is wrong, and wbat always was and is wrong, is uow called right. The future results I reserve for another article, as 1 know yonr readers do not like long essays. «*** an w Tennessee 4nd y ime h « bee*i * of the broa<j * of Ln Ecclesiastical Church Notices. ^—Rrr. The cbiel subjects of deliberation were, the |»ropo«itiou: The Lutheran Church distinguishes expressly what is commanded and left optional in the word of God; also the plan of uuiou of the Synods of Ohio, Missouri, Wisconsin, aud the Norwegian La theran Synod with the ao^alled Syn odical (Conference. The projected union was unanimously approved. The thesis in refereuoe to the true position which a Lutheran Christian should occupy in regard to the torn perancc movement were also discuss ed. The correspondent of Iter Luther aner says: “It ofteus occurs that many a Christian iu an exceedingly foolish aud injurious way attacks the temperance societies aud their doings in this country. This manner of pro feeding frequently countenances in temperate persons, topers, and habit oal drinkers. The thesis point out the right course, as follows: Oppose tem perance societies, but not temperance itself. The noble liberty of the chrts tiau should be maintained, but care should be taken, that it is not used for an occasion to the flesh or for s cloak of maliciousness." Holies. MARSH, 92 W. Baltimore 8L, Baltimore, Md. stendomj that I am ran. zealous for the Special Notioea Church Con— oration in Kentucky. For a great many years there have been some Lutheran congregations iu Booue County, Kentucky. One of these is in the village of Hebron ; the village taking its name from the chufch. The congregation has main tained iUk existence through many difficulties aud discouragements, and is in a vigorous, healthful condition to-day. Its two last pastors previ ous to the present one deserted the Lutheran faith and communion, and fell into the loving arms of their spiritual affinities in the Methodist Church; and the Lutherans of Boone County, standing steadfastly to their posts, could only say to them: "Go in peace, and sin no more." Early last spring, Rev. W. C. Barnett be came the pastor of the charge, and seems to be doiug a good work ainoug them, and is highly esteemed. This good brother is one of the early products of Wittenberg College, and daring all his training, and after a number of years speut in the Lather- an ministry, bad never seen a copy of the Augsburg Confession ! But, thanks to the General Council, his curiosity was finally awakened to see the document that he had heard so lunch abused as popish and mon strous. He procured a copy, and also the entire Book of Couconl. He has since been reading, believing, and coming to the knowledge of the truth, sq^that in spite of his previous education, he has become a Lutheran preacher, and now holds the faith which he once bitterly persecuted. There is, of course, nothing very remarkable in this, except to furnish another evideuce that “God is not mocked," and that his truth is power ful. The old brick church at Hebron was thoroughly renovated and eu- A recess was built for the Trust what Time has Sanctioned. The siaxiet that the voice of the people is the voice of the divinity, may in «ome case*, be open to doubt, bat the UwLituo- ny of honest and enlightened witnesses extending through a series of years, and all to the mine purport, is worthy of cre dence, admits of no question. Upon such testimony the reputation of Ilustetter's Stomach Bitters ss an antidote and cure for many ailments is based. Daring the twenty years that it has heea before the world, innumerable preparations intended to compete with it, have gone up like rockets, and come down the extiujruished sticks. Meanwhile the progress of that incomparable tonic has been swift and steady —always upward and onward like the eagle's flight. Its introduc tion produces a revolution in therapeutics, and it proved to be one of those salutary revolutions that ean not go backwards. To-day Hostetler's Bitters is one of the most popular remedies ia Christendom, aud commands a larger sale than any other medicinal preparation, domestic or imported, on this side uf the Atlantic. Aft a rare for dyapepaia, billions disor decs, nervous aflWtions, general debility, and as a preventive of epidemic fevers, it takes precedence of every other remedy. This fact should teach the ambitious country dealers who endeavor to foist their local abortions on the public in its •tend, how futile their small attempts to cgjuie the conunnnity must necessarily be.
