The day pre vious to this action had been apent in discussing the basis ot union with the Tennessee Synod, in which Dr. Fox, delegate of that Syuod, took a prominent part. The basis was adopt ed unanimously; but after its adop tion certain questions w ere propound t*d iu reference to letters which have receutly appeared iu the American Lutheran and the Lutheran Visitor. You know* something about these. The one was written by a minister, whose iutention was misapprehended; but the other was bona Jlde, and to th in intent: That, if the language of the basis in reference to. practice meant so am! so, then the writer endorsed it; if not, then he did not. Now, this minister was a member ot the Committee which framed the basis. Some people, you are aware, can not be made to understand even plain English. They can wrest Scripture beautifully to their own destruction; and so ,it was not wonderful that some'supposed that the basis was in tended to endorse, or, at least, to connive at the “mourner’s bench.” The supiHirters of this view were exceedingly few, but in deference to their prejudices, Syuod adopted a resolution resolving to defer the ques tion, in the hope that all would soon see “eye to eye” ou the subject of practice. The^details of the pro posed uniou have not been settled, but a Joint $y*o<i of North Carolina, Tennessee, and Holstein Synods will probably be tlu* result. The great difficulty with some on this subject chievoualy to the Southern church, causing alienations and divinftona between its Synods. We think we see in this thing the hand of Joab (Siess). We have no doubt It is the plan to connect themselves with the General I^omiicII.
