was found to be the best. She knew
now that Grace (.'haintver* would get
the Bible, and that Mr. Murray
would never give it to her. So she
was very sorfy about the matter.
Grace Chambers was the daughter
of a jioor washer woman, aud bad to
stay at home and take care of the
younger children while her mother
went out to work. Her father had
died suddenly, and they were very
l»oor. Every otts loved Grace, she
was so good, and always had a
bright smile on her (ace for every
oue. Then she wtu* very kiud to her
old grand father, who was a cripple.
-Mary had tried fbr nearly a month
to 1)6 just a* good Oi ski eonhl, and
now to have Mr. Murray Hud out
that she was a thief and a liar was
very hard, she thought. She felt
still worse when, the next Sunday,
he rose and called Grace Chamber*
to come forward and receive the
prize; aud theu he talked to all the
chHdreu about the little temptations
that they bad, autl reminded them
that now fruit ^wae lieginning to
ripen, they should remember that it
was wrong .to take peaches, jiears
;mu1 apples that were other people’ll,
aud that God looked ti|M>n such sins
with as lunch displeasure as he did
upon any one robbing a bank or
store. Mr. Murray talked a long
time to the children, and Mary weut
home resolving that she would break
off her sinful habits.

In one of the suburban towns, a
Sabbath-school teacher had a very
flue class of boys. Most of them
were from wealthy families. One of
them was the son of a poor widow
who had to sew, it might be mid,
almost day and night, to keep her
young family together. Our teacher
had again and again observed a lone
light shining brightly at lats hours
from the window of that mother’s
room, and then would come trooping
through his mind the words of that
refrain of Tom Hood’s song, “Stitch,
stitch, Stitch.” Th© tencher had
taught his boys to take off their caps
to him and to each other, as lie did
to them, so that ho and they were
quit© a marked feature of the vil
lage.
One day, a Boston merchant was
walking past the school room with
oar teacher, when the pupils were
coming out. They tumbled out as
usual, and rushed heedlessly by our
teacher and his friend—all but one.
That was the widow’s son. He
raised his cap so politely, It took the
merchant’s attention at once.
“Why, what a fine, well-bred lad !”
said he.
“Yes,” said the teacher, “and he
is the anly sou of a poor widow, who
is working herself to death to pre
pare him for a place in your store or
that of some other good man.”
“Artd she shall wot work in vain,”
replied the merchant^
Both turned at once, repaired to
the wldow’B room, and tho merchant
engaged the lad in bis store. Now
he is a partner with him iu a thriving
business, and all from that on© act

we began. Few of you child ion who
