Harper’s Ferry was reached about
7 A. M., where we expected to be
transferred to the W. &. 8. cars. To
our great disappointment the train
had just left, and we were doomed
to s)ieiid Ave boors in a place never
attractive, and loss so now tbau ever.
The late “great rebellion,’* and old
John Rrowu, and his crnel butchery
of innocent cRiaeus have made the
place historic. Eight miles from
here the cauooised saint was Imaged
upon a gallows as a murderer, with
the approval no doubt of a righteous
trod aud all law*-abiding men. We
were indebted to Bra. U. for a good
breakfast at tbe house of a friend,
ami whilst at tbe table observed the
water marks upon the papered walls
some Ave feet from the floor, as a
memento of the * 4 greot foot/* which
will long be remembered by the in
habitants of “the valley” as a most
terrible visitation, destructive alike
to Hfe and property. Tlie time spent
