Goneral Synod in North America— Aldrich, G. D. BefnhHni, Major Heilig, and others, of North Caroli na; Dr. Bachman, Boinost, Chisolm, and brethren wboae names we don’t remember, of South Carolina; Da vis, Roedel, Brown, of Virginia and South Western Virginia; Brown, of Teunessce; Bedvnbangh, of Georgia; and, in fact, all the churches, people, and > ministers who* said “yon and amcn w to the “this will do" of the men who mot at Con coni, N. 0.— wore moved by the Holy Ghost, sent by the Ron from the Father. There can lie no donbt that the General By noil in North America has, dating its short existence, ac complished much, that additional life, spiritual, true, evangelical life, has been imparted to the cbncches; fanaticism, on the 'one hand, been checked, and dead formality, on the other, been rebuked. The church in the South is truly Lutheran nnd truly evaugelical. The leaders of the General Coun cil know this. Hostile to the Gen eral Synod North, afraid that the Southern churches may ultimately unite with the Gcner|l Byuod North, both having Books of Worship, both favoring Revivals of Religion, U*h cultivating Fellowship with Sister Churches, are determined to prevent this by rneaus of Free Coufereuce, which these leaders will attend, ami by eloquence ami philosophy—one is a professor of philosophy, another enraptured the “down^eHsters* with his grandiloquence—labor to induce our unsophisticated, earnest South ern men, graduates of the school of afflictiou, to commit, to bind them selves, hand and foot, that the Southern Church may never become a part of the General Synod North. We declare that if forced, driven, worried, abused and tormented to abandon our present position, though we honestly, firmly believe that our appointment is from the Lord amt Head of the Church, even Jesua Christ; we, if the weltkre of the church requires an union with a Northern body, which, however, we do not now admit, will unjte with the General Bynod ^North. In it auy one oau be a true evangelical Lutheran, can hold to the Confession and to all the Symbolical Books, and yet nt the same time have the fullest and the freest liberty to wor ship, and to build up the church. I11 proof of this we point to the sainted John Phillip Cline, whose remains rest in the beautiful grave yard of St. Matthew’s church, New Market. When, last year, In Vir ginia, the preseut occupant of Fa ther Cline’s pulpit, the Rev. Mr. 8uyder, took us to the graveyard —w© have many brethren, whom we knew and loved, sleeping there — and led us to the grave of this faith ful witness, on which the penduleut brauchcs of au ash, planted by Rev. Snyder, drop the jiearly tears of morning. We recalled him, his doc trines, his life, liis work. The ultimate ahfact of the eontem- plated confereot'e must be <1 union of Ike Southern Church teith some ona of the Northern Chureheu. It ran mean nothing more. In a free conference yon would hear the learned Doctor* of the council netting forth with elo quence the a*lvantage the HSITtbem Church would have if united to tliat body. Then the Rev. l>oetor* of the General Byuod would reply by show lug, unmistakably, the duty of the Southern daughter* to return, aa prodigals, to the fold and' protection * of their Northern mother. A voice would also he beanl from another quarter, stating a frvr reasons why the contemplated union *honld take place.
