Soon after leaving Chattanooga for
Koine we come to a tunnel nearly
a mile in length, through which we

Into blocks about twenty inches long.
These are placed perpendicularly,
side by side, the ends presenting
the ajq>earance of long brick. Tlie
whole.is then covered with a prepa
ration which keeps it in a state of
preservation for a number of years.
Vehicles running over tlie Nieolsoo
pavement make scarcely any noise,
whieh is certainly one great advan
tage, os all know who have vainly
tried to become reconciled to the
incessant rattle of some cities.—
Memphis is also well provided with
Street railways, and “hacks and oin-
nibusses innumerable." Tlie build
ings of this tine city are in excellent
style and of very imposing appear
ance, scarcely any of them wearing
the look of age or presenting the
semblance of dilapidation. Every
thing combines to give one the idea
pf freshness, real life, and business
enterprise. We were much pleased
with the music provided evtry night
by the municipal authorities, aud
[discoursed by a most excellent band
