Tt is true, but not exactly in the application in which it* author used It, “extra eeetenia, non jmiltM.” It ia true, indeed, that oatiftrie of the Christian church, there la no salva tion. God has almt ns up to the nsa of the means of grace for salvatiou. If we neglect to make a fttithfiil nse of the means of grace he has put within our reach, we do it at our peril. And these means rtf grace are fonnd onhf in the ehnrrh. It is true that God has not shut himself up U> the use of the means pf grace that he 1mm given the bndrcli iu conferring salvation, aud that he may, as in the cose of the peniteut thief upon the cross, confer it withont them. * (’onaoqnently, he may, yaa, he doubtless dees, confer salvation upon those children of ehristiaus that die without having been baptized before they arrived at the years of discretion and responsi bility. But if parents permit their children to arrive at anch years withont having them baptized, and they die before they are brought into the church, what guarantee have we that they will ^>e saved f And if they are not saved, it will evidently be thought the fault of the parent. Doubtless, many youths will, iu the day of judgment, charge their parents with being the authors of their eternal loss through neglect of the faithful discharge of tlieir duty towards them whilst on earth. And how aw billy dreadful w ill be the ring of the stern Judge’s voice iu tire ears of those unfaithful parent* whose shortcomings, as .well as actual transgressions, have not berm repented of and forgiven, “Ye knew vour dutr, bat did it not."
