Attend to his
store, though he wonkl much rather
stay with his Minna, and gratify her
last wish. Wo one thinks of Henry,
who is more distressed because he
is not to have a Christmas-tree, than
because his dear sister is dying.
Minna awakes from her light
slumber, aud uncloses her eyes; she
still knows her mother. The door
opens; the Amtumun’s Adelheid, s
little girl of Mtnaa’s age, enters.
She wishes to see how her play-mate
is. She is shocked, the sight of the
poor sufferer overcomes her. She has
never yet been so near to death. ,
“What do you wish, my dear
child r asks Minna’s mother, bend

“Water," whispers she, looking
about the room, as If wanting some
thing.

to eatf’ asks Mis. Schroeder.
“Grapes. Please give me some
grajies,” whispers the sick child.
The mother looks troubled. Minna
has begged again and agaiu for
grapes, and her mother, who would
gladly gratify her every wish, cut)
not comply with this, the last and
only request of the dying ono,—
Where was she td get fresh grajies
from in mid winter t She beuds
over her sick child, trying to soothe
her, but Minna whispers repeatedly :
M I would like to have some grapes.”
The Aiutmatin's Adelheid listens;
she changes color, and sli(M quietly
und unobserved away. She has a
bunch, a fresh cluster of grai>es; she
can gratify the last and only request
of the dying friend. She bail read
in a book, that when the end of tlie
stalk of a btiuch of grapes wan
sealed np with ivax, aud the bunch
then carefhlly put away, it would
keep fresh till after Christinas.
Adelheid had selected a large aud
beautiful cluster, carefully lnhl it
away, and to-day ska intended to
put it on her father’s Christmas
plate. It is bis favorite fruit She

Adelheid did not hesitate long. Tlie
cheerfhl giver-gives quickly. Hhe
took the bnneb from its box, hid it
under her cloak, and hurried buck
to hi. Sjilmiwlcr’n. The door to the
sick mom was only half closed.
Minna was Wing with her eye* shut,
mid her mother was seated at her
l*jd, »#td»injf her Mi-h child.
“Hush, Usury,” said Adelheid; do
not wake yon r sick sister, lie p»*r

Here is a buucfi. Give it to your
mother, when she conies iu the room,
aud tell her-it is for Miimn. Do you

llenry was left aloue. Alone witli
the bunch of grapes. He waited far
his mother to coute, but she did not
more from tlie be<bride of his sister.
He kept eyeing the bum‘h of grapes.
How beautiful. How large. How
transparent the grai»es. The i»o»>r
boy lookisl, uud looked, and at last
they seemed to invite him to eat
them. He went to tho table, he pnt
his finger on the gr.i)H« to find out
if they were hard or soft. They
were soft. Assuredly they must be
good to eat. lie would Kke so

and kept looking at the beanUfal
aud tempting fruit. He will only
take one, a single grape ; his fingers
are around it—what is it! What is
it ? What scares him t His mother,
in the next room, moved. He stands,
as if caught doing what was wrong,
fixed to the spot, hit eves on the

the same time. No one comes. lie
soon gets over Ids dread, and the
dangerous contest begins anew.—
Why should not betake oneT Others

Henry touched the grapes a second
time ; he looked at them, tliey were
pleasant to the eyes, nice to finger,
they must be good to eat. He says
to himself: M 1 do not want the
whole btinch; far from it. I only
want to taste two or three of the
grapes. There is no harm iu that.”
But What makes the blood all at
mice rush to bis eheeks; why docs
his face turn so red! His mother
and bis teacher haw taught him
the Seventh Commandment— 1 ‘‘Thou
shalt not steal." Conscience brings
it to his remembrance; and whis

But Heiury will not obey the

But his aiqietite had now gained

grape* tasted so deliciously. He
peeped through the crack of the
door, his poor sister was lyiug so
pale and quiet on her sick bed.
That was not a pleasant sight to
him; be preferred to look at the
tempting frnit. All at once he trem

been touched. If bis mother saw it,
site would oak if he had done it.
What then t Henry was not afraid
of telliug a falsehood, but his mother

truth. But stop—she kuow nothing
