are building magnificent churches
and founding institutions of lcamiiig

don*. If our German forefathers,
who came to this country a century
ago, would have had the same zeal,

rhureh would be in a different condi
tion. We ran not but appland these

what they could for tire spiritual
wants of tho Germans in this State.
The lal sirs of tbe first of these Synods
were confined mainly to tire German
settlement at tho NVartbhrg, In Mor
gun County, ami various other ett
lagee and settlements accessible from
that point where the Kev. Pastor
Wilken so long and faithfully iubor-
ed. After his removal to the North,
this church and otlier meruit stations
wore visited occasionally by the Kev.
Prof. Eggers, of Nashville, and after
the failure ot bis health and Ms
removal to Pennsylvania, by the
I tee. G. Raehuiaa, Iris successor,
both of whom were luisshuiuries of
tbe Pittsburg ftynod. Under the
direction of the Mission Committee,
Knoxville, Chattanooga, and other
points were frequently visited by
these brethren, and the hen it* of 00 r
scattered brethren were encouraged
to look forward to a more ho|K>fnl
day. After many driays and disap
l>oiotmeots a so|mmte laborer was
obtained for Knoxvillo and udjaeent
parts, in the jktsou of Kev. John
Ueckle, of Memlota, 111., who Hurraed,
ed in organizing a German Lutheran
congregation in that place last An-
tnmn, and shortly after removed
there with his family. The rh-h
blessing of God bus ertivvoeil his
lal Kir ever since, and a neat brick
church has been erected, wtiich is an

school and Sunday serv ice have been

The eliureb itself will be consecrated
011 the 4th of September, on which

Pittsburg Synod is expected to be
