Figures will prove that the Gen.

North, did l«es for Southern Luther-
nns, than Northern Episcopalians,
Northern Presbyterians and North
era Baptists did for tlie mcmtwrahlp
of their re>n>ectivo churches in the
South.
And they do not lore utorermueh
yet, ns the article wo republish from
the Obtorter of July 29th, 1870,

A Rebel 1’bayeh.—Immediately
after the first day’s fight nt Gettys
burg, when the Union forces were
driven from Seminary Ridge, the
seminary building aud the professors’
houses were occupied as hospitals,
and hospital tents were pitched bo-
tween them. Tlie wonnded of both
armies were promiscuously crowded
in tlie halls aud cltiiiubent, hut all
seemed grateful thut such airy and
comfortable quarters had fallen to
their lot.
To tho praise id" tlie Southern
invaders it must be said that tlnty
resiHxitod the libraries of troth the
Scmiunry and College, and, whilst
greatly pressed for room, they did
not appropriate tlie library halls fur
hospital putiKXM'x. further than to
use them as medical offices. They
seemed to be greatly its need of blauk
imper, and evidently considered aU
needlessly wide margins as eoutni-
hand of war. Partially filled blank
books were tow fu I'prises; and some
of these, now filled with copies of per
script ions, give unmistakable proof
of the heroic treatment of many u
poor fellow, whose imins |M-riiu|M
could uot otherwise have been ultovi-
mcd. Such doses of opium !
List summer, whilst the librarian
of the seminary aud Ills assistants
were clearing out the duplicate books
aud pamphlets, they came across a
copy of the minutes of the General
Myuod, of 1859, ttpon the- cover of
which was written the following
prayer:
“ilkI this horrible war—it has
saddened the hearts of so many, both
ill the V. 8. Und O, H. O! thou who
coutrollest the destiny of nation* und
individuals, give us peace awl in
dependence !
“Would that tlie North would stop
this cruel war, aud let all parties
return to their quiet homes and
worship God trader tlicir own vine
and fig-tree! Surgeon, C. 8. A."
Well, 1 KUpimsc that tins confed
crate Mrgeow has Icunied by this
time that the South mude a great
mistake w hen the began “this cruel
war." Flis prayer, tw>, has l>e»-n In
part auswered; for the Nortli did!
stop “this cnit-1 war” by giving I he
South “peacs” (but not independ
ence,) and a lesson that s1h> will lie

We hope that all such will at once

bot also for the renewal of their

are making arrangements to publish
the Lutheran Visitor another year,
although we have not been sustained
according to promise by some, have
encountered violent opposition from
others, and bare iu addition bad to
fhmisb the paper to quite a number
who had made payments to Messrs,

If we intend to keep up our Gen
eral Synod, and to do the Lord’s
work in tbe way which is best cal
culated to build up tlie church aud
extend the kingdom of the Redeem
er within onr borders, we must have
a church paper of our own.
We are well aware that there are
those among us who look uorthward
with louging and loving eyes, but
were we nut once connected with the
chnrch North, and w hat did it ben
efit us! Were we nut treated as
poor relations !
What did the North do for us 1
It built up its own institutions, it
took our strong and working men
from us—Scbmucker, Ki-.uitk, Hawk
ey, Siess, Stork, Anthony, Bolton,
Copenhaver, etc., ete. It collected
funds, and then when troubles,
trials, afflictions and sufferings vis
ited us, our Northern brethren ex
communicated ns, and rejoiced over
our calamities.
