The Family.
FARENTS.
A Word to Parents
Parents are frequently tha cause
of many of the faults which grow into
great depravities in their children.
It is true that there are children
who receive a nature impracticable—
almost unmanageable. It is true
that the sins of the fathers are
in such a souse visited upon their
children, and their ‘children’s chil
dren ; and that parents frequently
have to manage children that task
their wisdom, and would task the
highest wisdom. But these are ex
ceptional cases Ordinarily, our chil
dren are very much what we make
them. A great many bad men are
made bad by the moral government
aud the mistakes of parents. The
very theory of family government
frequently destroys the child. For
there are many that act as though
they believed that their children
were pretty little slaves; that the
Lord filled their houses with them
to serve them. It is supposed that
the child is in the house to. run
errands for the parent; to hand him
things; to amuse him ; to be of use
to him hi his hours of leisure; and
the pareitt acts all the tiiue as though
it was the busiucs* of the child to do
these things. Sometimes the child
is treated as if he had no rights, lie
is snubbed as if he had no feelings.
He is frequently provoked—a ml to
snch a degree that the Scripture
tteps in and says, “Fathers, provoke
not your children to auger, lest they
be discouraged,” and become deajie-
rate, aud do not eare bow they act.
It grows out largely from the old
Roman and Oriental notion of son-
ship. For parents were the owuors
of their children, jnst as they were
the owner* of anything else that was
their property. But wc are living
in commnuities whore different ideas
prevail; and now, children will not
submit as once they would have
submitted. It is said that children
are a world smarter than they used
. to be. They are; and yon can not
help it. Society is different. The
theory of society is different. Gov
ernment does not menu the same to
ua that it .meant to antiquity. And
in such ft liberalized community it is
impossible to continue the old Roman
doctrine of family government. If
children are tiviug in such an atmos
phere, or surrounded by such influ
ences, it will lead to "resistance ami
recrimination.
Worse than that, ij, leads children
to deceit Being treated as slaves,
they imbibe the vices of slaves, one
of which is craft. Weakness always
employs deceit against force. Since
it can not resist openly and overthrow
it, it undermines it to its harm.
In that way children are over
governed, and sinfully, almost brutal
ly governed in tlie household. It is
a mercy and a special providence ot
God if they grow np uncon tamiuuted.
They are twisted, they are bent,
they are fatally damaged; and there
is many aud many a parent, I doubt
not, who in amazement will rise in
the last day, to hear the Judge
deelare, “The ruin of that child I lay
at your door. Te caused him to

On the opposite side la also the
mischief and the injury done nuinteu
tionally, but nevertheless jnst as
really, by those who love their child-
dren weakly, who love them without
any Benue of equity, who love them
with such self-indulgence that they
can not bear to pain them eveu as
much na is necessary to make them
well-governed children. They iti
dulge them to their harm; and ao
bring them up to self-indulgence and
matter for you to he intrusted with
the rare of God’s little children.

beautiful thing in its way—that but
terflies were let loose, so light, and
gay, and lmppy are the hearts that
sail together and piny around such
other. One would think, to hear
the cheerful congratulations that ac
company the (Hitting ont of a young
life iu the family state, that there
was u» responsibility connected with
the event. And when there begin tn
be “angels unawares" coming into
the household, one after another,
how joyous it is! Aud the silver
cu(>a and little congratulatory note*
are plenty. But how flew there are
who feel that, from the time the door
of lifo opens, and a child is bom,

of himself to the parent, ami said,
“Keep it tilt I come! take this, my
own child, and educate it for me.
