Roanoke College Commencement.
These excereises commenced on the
12th of Jane with the Bacctdaureate
Sermon by the President, and an
address on the evening of the name-
day before the Young Men's Chris
tian Association, by Her. A. Phil
lippi, of Wythe County, Va.
Of these exercises we tan only
speak from the testimony of others,
as it was not our privilege to bear
them.
It is enough to say that they fully
met the high expectation raised on
such occasions. Bov. Pbillippi’s ad
dress was so much appreciated that
he has been called upon to furnish a
eopy for publication in our columns,
and we hope he will comply with the
request, when our readers can jttdge
of its merits for themselves. Monday
night, June Id, the contest for Prise
Medal in Oratory took place, iu the
preseaee of a large assembly of the
citizens and visitors.
We reached Salem by the 9 o'clock
train of that eveuing, anil out of the
eight contestants liad the plea sore
of listening to the last three only.
Tire medal was awarded to j. W.
Marshall,-of Augusta County, Va.
We were farured with hearing his
address ou *‘Triumph* iu Adversity,”
and can testify that as to ability in
bundling his subject, elegance of
diction, and of delivery, it is seldom
equalled. And the almost universal
sentiment was, that though all the
young men acquitted themselves
most nobly, yet the decision of the
Committee was in perfect accord
with the merits of the cose.
Tuesday moruing sill o'clock the
address before the .Society of Alumni
was delivered by the jfiuinr partner
of the firm of Kudo & Miller, editors
and publishers of the Lutheran Vis
itor. The theme was “Our Age : Its
