suggestions for the nurture of chil
dren in health uf body and spirit:
1. Never refuse a thing if it is
harmless, but give it, ff yon are able,
without delay.
2. Jlever give anything because
it is cried for, that yon have refused

give it to yon,® when there is no
reason for refusal, except that you
are yourself tired or in trouble, or
out of sorts.
8. Avoid giving orders, such ps
“Stand still,? “Go on,® “Hold your
tongue,® “Put ii down,® ete., unless
yon really mean that they should be
obeyed; and the fewer orders yon
give, the better.

My Youuy Friemix; Courage is,of
the first importance to each one of
you, whether young gentletnau or
lady. Hut it may be thought eonr-
age is not a requisite to young
ladies—that it is » masculine virtue,
and would 111 accord with the gen-
tieuess and modesty of the tender
inaideu. But notwithstanding this
opinion is held by many, still we
must insist upon it, that courage is
very neceeawy to the young of both
sexes.
; But by courage we do not mean
that dare-devil spirit that prompts
the young man to resent an injury
with blows or with a challenge, or
the yonng lady to do anything that
would be altogether ont of harmony
with her characteristic gentleness
and retiring spirit.
There is a commodity that passes
in the world for courage, and which
' gives a kind erf notoriety to those
who manifest it, but which does not
