Yeare passed, ami one day I was
strollijig through the Still, shady
groves of Oreeuwood Cemetery, when
a funeral procession fili*d slowly iu.
I followed it, anil when the mourners
and others left the carriages, I went
with them to tbe open grave, and
stood near to the pjill-bearors as
they deposited their burden, for a
few moments, on the rude boards
placed to reeeive it. The coffin was
very rich and costly, and as’ a sun
lieau, the farewell of the departing
day, flashed across the silver plate
on the lid, I read—
“Lewis Abbott. AoBD 18.”
“So y oung,” thought I, sadly; “eut
down iu the very spring time of life.”
When the coffin was lowered, the
mother, who had been strangely
rairn. suddenly sprang away from
tlie arm on which she had been
leaning, threw herself on her knees
beside tbe grave, with her hands
c lasped and her tearless eye gazing
wildly down in the dark reoepta
ele.:
“O my precious boy! Lost, lost
forCYtr l Sent to perdition by your
mother’s hand!” As this despairing
cry burst from her lips, she threw
her arms upward, and, with a deep
groart of mortal anguish, fell back
death like and inanimate. She was
carried by her friends to the house
•of this officer in charge of the ccme
tery, and I, shocked and startled
beyond measure, left the place with
that terrible cry of self reproach
ringing in my ears. As I passed
out, I met a friend to whom I re
lated what had transpired, mention
ing the name of the youth.
“I beard of his death this morn
ing. Poor Lewis 1 It is a brief but
sad history, aud as I have known
the -family for years, I can explain
the scene you have witnessed.
“Mts. Abbott was famed for her
brandy peaches, and allowed her
children to eat of them freely. Lewia,
the eldest son, r etnod to have a spe
cial fondness for them, carrying one
to school almost every day as a part
of his lunch. After n time he began
to hog for the lrrancly in which flte.V
provements, in personate, as flic )t*rt
of tlie lrnir, the rotor of the kids,
tin? twirl of the nitnn, Ac. These
highly important accomplishments can
be acquired milch easier than a habit
of iinwarying truthfulness.
Do yon hope, then, to succeed in
life f resolve, tbst, cost what It will,
your wont sluill never beat a discount,
shall never be protente:l at the Imnk
of public confidence. Truthfulness
is an essential to success in life with
every young man, but how deeply
essential to those who arc poor in
property! To such, a* we said in
the outset, it is capital.
Iiet every young man acquire the
reputation of truthfulness on all oc
casion.-, and if lie have, in connec
tion, reasonable industry, he can
command assistance, through the
help of which he will prosper.
To have ft currently believed of
yon in your community : “That
young man will always speak the
tmt'-’,” is worth more than a fortune
in money without such character.
It is true that “A good name is
rather to be ckoacn than great rich
cs.” Ami no one, not known to bo
ever truthful, can have a pood name.
Youth of the Sonth, who, through
tbe fortunes of war, are, to a large
extent dependent upon yourselves,
be true men. “Bny the truth and
sell it not.” Speak truth, net troth,
lire trntb, and God, ever observant
of your character, will richly reward
you. M.
