i ef tbs Bible.
Two weeks ago, at a Convocation
of the bhihops "tad clergy Of the
southern yivvinc** of England, then
in aciwiou in Loudou, the subject of
a revision of the Old and New Testa
ment was discussed. The Bishop of
Winchester suggested that a com
mittee of both bouses be chosen to
report—in conjunction with any com
raitte* that may be appointed by the
convocation of the Norther* prov-
iuces—on the desirableness of a
revision of the authorised version of
the New Testament, either by mar
ginal notes or otherwise. The Bath
op gave his reason for the maffton :
1st, ‘-that it was the boamden duty
of the church to see that what she
put forth was the very word of God.
2nd, that the proposed investigation
was rendered necessary by the feet
that there was a widely spread im
press ion that the New Testament
eootained passages that had no right
to be there. 3d, that there were un
questionably passages in which the
right word did not appear, and in
others where the word had now n
different meaning from what it had
the time it was written.” The
Bishop of Gloucester, in seconding
the motion, declared that it was no
longer possible for an earnest man
to ignore a subject of ao much im
portance. He called attention to
certain passage* in the Testament,
to prove the necessity of the proposed
inquiry, and remarked that “ooe
id fetter made n grant diffcieuce
the meaning of a subject ef the
greatest importance.* The Bishop
of Saint Davids waa also hi favor of
the proposition. Us did not believe
that the revision which had b:en call
ed for would be found to effect any
doctrine which the church now held.
But whilst he would sustaiu the
motion for n committee of inquiry,
there were, aevertbelees, three causes,
which, in his opinion, were calculated
to prevent the church from recoin
mending such an undertaking as
that proposed: 1st, the fresh die
coven**, which were continually
being made in Biblienl reaeureh. 2d,
the doubt whether a new version of
the Scriptures woald race! ve uai\crsal
assent, aad the evfl which would
ensue if there should he a ‘Church
Bible’ and a ‘Dissenting Bible.’ The
third objection or difficulty,’’ be said,
was that wbeu the authorised vrr
ion bad received all the amendments
it deservedly required, it would be
found to hare effected a very great
change in many imrta, and one would
be, that it would deprive a number
of the clergy, and still mure of the
dissenting ministry, of some of their
favorable texts. He referred to
certain translations, and said his
belief was that n revision would
result ia great advantage, and in
crease the value of the Scriptures In
the English reader, net only to public
but in private, and prove the extent
of that inadequacy and imperfection
they ought not to conceal. The
result of the inquiry woald alter, to
w great extent, the meaning of por
tions of the Holy Scripture*.* The
Bishop of IJandaff approved at the
appointment of n committee, and
spoke warmly of the deairnhleoeas
of considering n revision of both the
Old and New Testaments. Ha sug
gested therefore, that the inquiry
should embrace both. The amead-
by the Biahop
of Winchester, and in this form the
resolution waa agreed to.
