The Sabbath-School.
“Relation of the Sunday-School to the
Community."
Rev. J. F. Elder, of Xew Jersey
while speaking hefbre the late Sun
day-school Convention- at St. LoUis,
on the “Relation of the Sunday-school
to the Community,” said :
“The Sunday scho.l is a conserva
tor of public morals. There arc many
complaints over the degeneracy of
the age. But we have faith in Chris
tiauity, and we accomplish the moral
regeneration of the commnnity by the
instruction of the children. We im
plant within them self-respect, but
more imjiortant than this, we implant
mofal principles. There is no moral
evil which may not be reached by the
Sunday-school in its instruction in
the Word of God ”
The speaker closed his address
with the following beautiful illu^tra
tion:
“I sec starting from yonder depot
a locomotive, with its long train of
cars, trailing them, as one has said,
as a l»oy trails a whip beliinal him, so
easily do they glide-along. Bnt the
floods gather in the hc&vens, and the
snow Hakes begin to fell, they fell
upon the iron rails, and are at once
crushed beneath the wheels; they
Ml upon the hot back of the monster,
and are annihilated in an instant;
but still they come thicker and faster,
they fill np the space between the
rails, they cover the track, at last
they clog the wheels ami pile them
selves up inch by ineb, till the move
ment of the great locomotive becomes
slow dr and slower, and at yonder
station they add another locomotive
and hitch on the snow-plow, and then
dash away again on through the
snow; but the little snow flakes,
laughing in yonder gorge, summon
to their aid the east wind and the
north wind, and in joyful glee pack
in their little forms closer and closer
, into that gorge, inch by inch and foot
by foot, until they have piled up a
great wall of snow. Onward the
mighty train comes thundering, and
flings itself into that bank—but it
goes not through it. They retreat,
they start again; bnt the little snow
flakes, nothing daunted, pile them
selves higher and higher, thicker and
faster and more compact, and at
length make an impenetrable barrier,
and the ponderous train is lodged
fast—storied by snow flakes. Little
things are they, but mighty when
combined. And now, I see plowing
over our wide domain, rolling over
our broad prairies, these frightful
engines of intemperance, infidelity
and Romanism, plowing up the very
foundations of our Government and

Tbe first Babbutli-scbool iu Hpuiu
was opened at Seville, on thu 7th
of March, in a building whose walls
inclose .the site of the old Autoda
Fe of Seville, and contain tbo ashes
of the mnrtyrs of three eenturtes.
There were abont seventy five rebel
ars present, not one of whom had ever
heard a Sabbath-school hymn. They
were taught, “Happy d»y, nappy
day,” and the words and tunc took
like magic. Mr. Henry C. Qadl a^ys
he heard it whistled that night uaderf
his windows, which ore two mile*
from the chapel. Five months before
such a meeting would h*ve Been
broken up, and all tbe adult*'taken
to prison, with the papcip^kof mauy
of the children. Preparations are
making to inaugurate similar insti
tutions in Madrid, Malaga, Cordova,
and other places.

We have long since been neuviuoed
of the serious injury which Sunday-
schools are sustainin
of clownish speakers
their ftinny yarns upon the c
for tbe purpose of laughter and f buy if,
amusement. They will t*^- : fifthir
fun of anecdotes and their fintfflatic
awkwardness to the utmost in order
to bring down the house, aud thus
play the buffoon before the children.
And that, too, wbeu they are speak
ing upon tbe most solemn subjects.
It is time that this class of Sunday
school workers should reform. Pas
