Paul and Elisabeth Henkel, was bnru in Shen andoah County, Va,, near Solomon’* rharcb, 10 miles Northwest of New Market, on the 11th day of duly, 1786, and was initiated into the church through the Holy Miicrameut of Baptism, in liis infancy, mid at a more mature age, entered into full poAimunioii with the Evangelical Lutheran church, through the ancient and-solemn rite of Confirmation. Previous to his arrival at the age of 16years, he resided, with his father, sacecssi\-ely in Staunton, Va., Ninth Carolina, and New Market, Va., and at each place attendeil seluad—ac quiring a good Gt-rtiutii Education, oousidcrabie proficiency in Engliah* studies, and some familiarity with Latin, Greek, and Hebrew. He con tinued the prosecution of his studies, however, during nearly his entire life. In 1803 he started,, on foot, to Hagerstown, to learn the printing business. Alter working with Mr. Gruber, of Almanac reputation, and at Reading and in Baltimore; for three or four years, he purchased the bed and irons of a ramage-press ami some old type, and coming home pro cured a horse and cart, with which, returning he brought them from Hagerstown and, iu 1806, established the first printing office in New Mar ket, With these old type, and cuts made by himself, he published a pic torial Oermau Spelling Book of his own arrangement. In 1807, having added, by small pun-liases, to liis material, he commenced the publica tion of a weekly German paper, called the Virginia and Xnr Market Popular - instructor and Weekly Kerri, which continued for two years—and sus pended from want of advertising pat ronage. Tin* office was, however, continued as a Book anil Job office liy him, until he sold to his brother Solomon about 1817. The father of the Eihtur of the Register, worked in this office, if lie did not hum the business there. About this time. In connection with his brother Solomon, he engaged in the mercantile business at tlie Old White Corner, New Mar ket, Shenandoah Co., Va. In the midst of a nourishing busi ness, being a maj» of goodly ap|>ear- ain-e, fine native’ talent, piety, and devotion, and evincing considerable theological attainments, he received a call from several congregations, urging, and almost constraining him to engage in the office of the ministry;; and after a considerable eon diet be- tween liis secular pursuits mid this pressing call, his conscience anil sense of duty led him to accept the calL was crowded almost the entire his tory of the ITnited States. In yontli lie wns till I of life, energy, and in dustry. I'mlanutedly he started out to breast the world’s tide with scarisdy a dollar, lie wits, perhaps, the oldest practical printer and Editor in the State—having Edited a newopuper in this town 63 year* ago. When- he tu-eded a fancy type, a picture, a cut, tin- book or ]Ni|>er, lie addressed himself to the work of milking it, and lie did it well—cast the plate, fastened it on the wissl, engraved it, mid printed it. When he needed binding up|uinitus, he made it himself, lor the liiteks he murbled plain piqs-r in a most Is-uu tifill manner. With the facilities for procuring material, for printing and binding, which wo have now, it scouts almost im|Mmsible that he should have accomplished so lunch with so little means. His printing, although done with the ‘-nigger head" instead of rollers; was clear nud clean and neat; starting with only the irons ouil lied of an old ramage press mid with a few half-worn type—lie.added by degrees to his stock, by |Mirclia*e and bis own iitannfucturiiig, until when lie sold his office, lie hail gathered around him the material to do rvnlly first-class work. He “set" his last type in 1860. As a writer ami translator he was noted for the precision and nmirory of liis style, rather thnii ornament. He was a profound thinker, and earnest student and forcible s|ieaker. His habits of life weir simple, bis manners umisitimiing, hut the ten acity with which lie adhered to that which he deemed right wan unwaver ing. Iu the uiiiiistry lie was distin guished for his earnestness and zeal. He laUirrd not that men should praise him—hut that they might re ceive and treasure up the truths which lie Wits teaching. Possessed of strong common sense. In 1 rarely failed to inquirt instruction to the uiost ignorant. Such men as be, are the strength ami security of every section, and his death was the cause of U general sorrow. In all the varied relations of life, polka-al, so cial, official and domestic, he was a true patriot, warm friend, earn est and gentle counselor, ami a tender and affectionate father and relative.
