The star that set upon oor earthly homo Bad risen in^lory, and in pure skies Was shining; tod the lamp wo sorely missed Shed its soft radiance in a better home. • ieeaaea And nose who looked oo her could choose but fa Era, sweet angel, God be blessed for thee!" Wbat parent who has children in heaven can read these beautipjl passages with tearless ctcs?. And yet. the rainbow of hop* and joyous asnur tnce arches over the tears, and tolls of brighter skies beyond. Bible, which of itself is ju> benefit?, in#-stores a truth as (rood anti kind as hi> wtut skillful, and could heul every dfeease. Yon describe his meeting with Jesus, repeat his iniplorinft words, and the ready, eompussionate, assuring an- swer. Then, ou the return Journey, you say, the rider’* servants meet him with their awrriwftil message, and the father’s blurt sinks; but .lesw. reassure* him, telling him only to believe, and site ukall be made well. They reach the house, and the noisy multitude are sent away. Tlien you tell of the Lord’# entering that hushed chamber—only the fa ther and mother aud three ehoseu disciples with him—aud ;»eUm>, as you may, the resurrection-scene! Will you fall to intciest, to enchain your child’s attention t Ami when you add that this is all true, do you not see that you have written it inefface- ably on his mind 1 Tltis is a lair sample. The stories of the Bible are rich in incident, and afford broader scope for the imagina turn than do fairy tales or ; foetus. One reasou that they are written so concisely—lialf-obseurely, often, may be that we may dwell on them, draw ing out tluiir beauty liu*' by line, aud thus realize their hidden power. Let children, then, leuru liible verses, but let them have their sto ries, t«o; and these are better told thau read. YOUTH. The Family, PARENTS, • Bible Stories. Tl.e two Bible series toehild can hardly be over-estimated. Be sides awakening an interest in tho small th In a child’s mind more tloejdy than almost anything else. An objection is sometimes rimde to telling these stories, instead of reading them in the words of the Iiiblej and it is a plnnjnblc one. It is thought best to store children’s memories with tho wry words, in Hie hojie that they will be of use in after life. This, certainly, does apply to many passages; if written in the memory, they will, in times of doubt and temptation, sorrow and pain, eome into the thought with strength, suc cor, guidance and comfort. Bnt this is trite of as different class of passages. Often a single verse Will meet the need of sneh a time far better thau ten chapters of narratives could do. The general irhpmtxwH of the latter is what is really helpful; aud the more deeply a child is intenented in a story, the 8trtinger will be the impression it makes. I have tested this matter with my own child. I was at first inclined to use only the words of the Bible, Wishing these to be remembered, and thinking, too, that I whs wanting in aptitude to tell them otherwise. But I found, it impossible really to inter est the boy; he would listen only as to a lesson. I tried the other way, and With a marked difference of result. Why is this t It seems to me that the reason lies here. The Bible merely states events, in the most concise manner possible, leaving a wide margin for the imagination, as regards sceiK’ft ; and ofriithctei’s, anti everyday life. It can do ns ver^ little good to read these accounts, unless we dwell on them sufflcSently to picture them in our thonghts. Just this we need to make plain to the chiltP^as it were, to draw the picture for bim, and hold it up to his view. Tlien the story becomes real to him, and his interest is easily won. * Take, for instance, the raising of Jairas’ daughter. You may read it aloud, and unless yon have told your child to listen, be will hardly notice it. If yon have, it will not be likely to arouse his feelings, or toncli him with a sense of its beamy. Bnt suppose in the pleasant-twilight hour, or the quiet Sunday, he conies to your side, asking for a story. You describe the eastern country, the is well worth'Wbtatniiijk for more than one reason,) then speak particu lariy of the rider's house, where, ‘amid the luxury, a great sorrow swept its dark wing—the only daagli ter having just died.
