Kriter’s (Woodstock) charge. The church i* built at Tom’s Brook, Va.; is forty-Are feet long and thirty dive (pit wide; is a frame building, neatly weather-boenletl without and plas tered within; is situated at the very edge of the valley turnpike leading pom Winchester to Staiiutou; and U a credit to the lwstor and i»eople by whom it was bnilt. The day of dedication was bright, fleer and warm, the rands in pood otder, and, consequently, the throng of people was immense. Not even a third of the multitude present could And a smt or even a standing place in the ehureh. At the regular hour of morningservkethe writer preached the dsdientinn sermon from S Chron. vii: L At the flow* of tin* sermon the pastor stated that a debt of to- tween five ami six hundred dollars yet rente,! on the building, uml the ehureh eoold not be consistently given to the Lord while the debt was unpaid, and with a most com mendable lilierality this noble totml of Christian people raised the anuHint on the spot, aud Bra. Keller pro- reedetl to dedicate the church to the worship of the Triune Gwl according to the impressive and appropriate form contained in the Book of Wor ship, giving it the name of 8t. Peter’s Evangelical Lutheran clum-h. In the afternoon a most edifying tarip- taral sermon was premhed by the Mev. Thomas Miller, of the Tennessee Synod, after which the laird’s Stqqs-r was administeird to a large number of romiminicants. At uight Rev. G. A. What will' the admirers of liis prowess think when told that at St. Peter’s the undersigned had a stentorian ranrimt with about nit liearty squall- ers, and cleared the field, though not without “ considerable loss” and “dreadful deinorili/.ation.” Among the incidents of the day, a venerable octogenarian, who, “by reason of strength,” bad gone be yond fourscore, aud whose lullin' is identified with one of Virginia’s noted battle-fields intercepted ns ivivately, and said that lie bad known ami lord our iatlicr and mother in their youth, and had cherished their memory us the dear est recollection of earth, and had remained there all day, witiiout refreshment, for an opportunity to kiss the Ueisender “for his imrents.” Be honored his sentiment*—they touched our inmost soul; but bis mode at expressing them, we thought, was the most unsentimental, uu- ■aairai, unpoetical and—because of tobacco—simo rory rendition of “£*t me kills him for liia motlK-r’ weeverexperiened since that famous *wng was written. There is also another just inference : tlie General Hynod has of late maul feated a dis|asiitkw to have us return to its fokl, and this generally timmgh . this same Dr. Butler. How do these things com|airt T Pouring oil ou tnwbleil waves with one baml, ami with the other U|qilying the turrh. Tin* General Hynod Miaith will soon meet in regular senihai. ami it is time that we understand what it will be expected to du. Up to tins time it bus Inch engaged in defining its doctrinal, ixaatioa, preparing its Book of Worship and completing thoroughly Its outfit for the battling it most do in the cause of Christ. Henceforth R must enter the field and wage that war to the lest of its ability. If R meet merely to ilk enss |Mjinta, it will doubtless le come aa pointed as some other er- rlesisstiral bodies, who deem it their I>arnmount doty to lacerate, stick ami inflict wounds. To them tickings tlie snsteiitation ol weak congregations Mid bringing missions into self-supporting organi rations, but the General Hymsl should do the wgrk of inaugurating missions and sustaining them for the first year or two. Not one sf the Synods can alone raise money enough iu one year to maintain a mission, but the Synods together urn. Let money be raised by the Synods, as nt present, and each body determine how ninch of its proceeds it will con tribute, out of its own collections, to the General Synod fund. As the people see no proposition to make advantageous n*e of any ftinds, they do not, of coarse, feel disposed to oontrimite. The olflect and plan now proposed would secure an aver age of |200, at least, from each Synod, and the aggregate would be sofik ieiit to carry on with some de gree of vigor the work of ehnrrh extension. 1IOUKN. ..
