Consecration of the Evangelical Lu
theran St Paul's Church. Wil
mington, N. C.
We lia<l a solemn time there on
Sunday, the 22d of August- The
German congregation commenced the
building of a church nine years ago,
sad they have now finished the work
amidst great difficulties, although
they have been for years without a
pastor. The writer, who is himself
engaged in the erection of a church,
and tolerably well acquainted with
eeetosiastic architecture, was greatly
surprised nt the taste, ehnrchliuess
and beauty of this edifice. Although
only 65 by 45 feet, it has nevertheless
a handsome steeple. It is built of
bricks, and covered with slate laid
down in » cruciform pattern. The
outside could hardly be simpler.
The beauty consists in its admirable
proportions. The style is Gothic,
which we insist is the only legitimate
style for German clmrelies, and the
interior presents the most elegant
church that we have seen this side
Hof the ocean. The pulpit, the altar,
the pews, the gpllerv, only over the
vestibule, the lofty ceiling laid off in
panels, and the massive roof timbers
aU in pure Gothic style, nre of
Southern yellow pine, not painted,
but varnished. Hie wood lias Iieen
so jndiciousl v chosen aml^ carefully
selected, that it surpasses in appear
ance the richest maple. The red
cushions and eaqieting make an
admirable contrast. But the win
dows ! Also p«re Gothic double
windows, with rbomlm above for
emblems^-bow charming! The light-
grey glass with black araliesipies
and shadings, edgings of bine, red,
yeHow, and green; emblems in kite-
head, Sncli as the Bible, the ernes,
the crown, the baptismal fount, the
enp, the lamb, tlie dove, stars, and
eye*—it is magnificent. Tlie whole
coet about #18,000, and it is almost
paid for. We rejoice together with
the congregation over this geui of a
church, and trust that they value it
as they ought. Four Lutheran min
isters took part in its consecration,
in tlie presence of a large collection
of Germans anil Americans. Tlie
dear, sonorous sounding bell, a pres
ent of two of the members, summon
ed ns together at ten o’clock; the
services enrameneed at eleven o’clock,
A. M. We passed from the vesti
bule to tlie altar, nsing the liturgical
prayers and responses. Rev. G. I>.
Bemheim conducted the liturgical
services in German, and ReV. C. II.
Bemheim and AV. A. Julian, of the
Synod of North Carolina, to which
8t. Paul's belongs, and the under
signed from the Synod of South
Carolina, assisted. Tlie Church
Council took their position at the
altar. The solemn res]smses of the
Pennsylvania Synod’s German Litur
gy, the Creed, and the Lord’s Prayer,
in which all joined audibly, produced
a deep impression. AVe hope that
the hearts of every one present was
also consecrated to God during the
service, and that they may be tem
ples of tlie living God.
Bev. G. D. Bemheim preached an
English sermon, based on Lnke x:
25) 24, after the consecration. Tlie
sermon was appropriate, especially
'■** regards the distinctive prominence
given to the Confession and excel
lencies of the Evangelical Lutheran
Church. The writer preached in tlie
afternoon from Psalms xxvi: G—8;
and Rev. Julian delivered a sermon
at night from Solomon’s Song vi : 10.
Thfi &U(lienecg were large, and deep
impressions were doubtlessly pro-
traced. The dear people in Wilming
tjjm are, alas! without a minister.
They need one who can preach both
German and English. May tlie Lord
*>°n send a good shepherd into this
interesting field.
This church proves anew what the
iMty of one churebly-miuded man
n accomplish in a congregation.

The Book of Worship in South Carolina.
3fr. Editor;*I have just returned
from a visit to Lexington County, and
after spending more than a week with
kind friends I return somewhat dis
turbed in mind in regard to tlie pros
pects of our beloved Zion, which is
always uppermost iu my mind, and
dearest to my liearf.
Our CouferCneh wns held at Bethel
Church, in Brother J. N. Derrick’s
charge. Tlie Conference watt inter
esting. Twelve churches out of the
fifteen in our bounds were represent
ed by delegates. Revs. Berly, Boin-
est, Derrick, Hawkins and Hlioaly
were present. The discussion of the
“Book of AA'orship” showed that men
will differ, but, although they differ,
they can yet agree.
One brother is not pleased with the
Book; says it is “made up of ifs and
ors,” and that as such, it can not
produce that uniformity so desirable
in our church. He is now corres-
|MHiding witli a distinguished Pro
fessor iu Saxony, for tlie ptiqiose of
ascertaining tlie precise forn^of ser
vice used by Dr. Sutton, and when
he gets that our people “shall use it
word for word, as Luther did.” But
that same brother that eveuing, iu
a family containing four iitemlx-rs,
three of whom nre Methodists, de
clared that hr trim not a Lutheran oh
some points of doctrine, and those
particular isiints are the very esseure
of Lutheranism.
Auotlier brother has no objection
to the Book, ami insists on its being
used in all its parts on every occasion,
and that is the ouly way to secure
uniformity, but thut it matters but
little whether we imitate the Luther
ans of Saxony j those of Sweden or
Norway, or tliufte of the Pennsylvania
Synod. Let us accept the Book ns it
is, and not lie n]iciiig all the sects
aronml its.
Another brother had nothing to
say ou the subject, while his |ieople
nre iu the dark, ami nre looking to
hint for information ami instruction.
A certain eirrnit rider, too, is tell
ing our Lutherans that the Book
of AA’orship contains falsehoods, and
should not be allotted a place in their
houses, and that the l.n the rams are
point) to hell. AVe thought it very
strange that the brother luul nothing
to say.
Another brother found nothing iu
tlie Book but scriptural, Lutheran
doctrine, ami although be was not
very fond of a liturgical service, yet
he practiced it because it was La-
tlierau, twl because the Book had
been prepared by wise ami pious
men, in whom lie had all confidence,
and who knew better than he what
tlie churches needed. He would not,
and it wns presumption in any man
to set himself up iu opitositiou to the
whole church unless lie could prove
and defend his ]M>sitioii, ami so the
laity should view the subject. There
was certainly no more piety among
the few wlio oppose the Book, than
among its friends. Opixwdtion ill
this as in all other nseful things,
usually arose front ignorance of 1st
theran doctrine and practice; lie
had not yet found an intelligent
Lutheran wiio op|x>sed the Book.
I find in (Hissing through the
rliurcli that the introduction of the
Book of AA’orship lias considerably
agitated the membership. It eonsti-
tntes an important event in the his
tory of Lutheranism in our section
of the church. It places before tlie
jieople tlie prominent doctrines of onr
chnreb, and they are lieginning to
learn that we differ in many very
imi>ortnnt particulars from snrround-
ing denominations. It breaks up
established customs nml practices
into which we had heedlessly fall
en; and with the uninformed there
exists, as a matter of course, n preju
dice against it; and the great work
for the ministry now is to overcome
that prejudice.. This can not be done
by force—by the ministry jxwsisting
in the size of the Book, without ex
plaining its peculiarities, nml allow
ing its advantages. Tim distinctive
doctrines contained in the confession
are but imperfectly nnderstixxl by
the majority of onr laity, and by
many of onr clergy. Some of the
surrounding denominations rejoiced
in the fact that tlie introduction of
the Book of AVorsliip furnishes them
an opportunity- to so work as to
cause the prejudices of our people to
contrilmte to the bnihling up of their
own sects. And there are a few
clergymen to be found in almost
every section of tlm church—men
who degrade the holy office—who
will labor tenfold harder to make a
proselyte from nnotffcr church than
to gain a lost sinner from the world.
AVe want doctrines in onr pulpits.
Tlie people are calling for it. This
is one of the incalculable benefits of
the Book of AVorsliip. It has already
awakened a spirit of inquiry. Onr
membership read, and they call for
light on wliat they read. Our paper,
tlie Lutheran Visitor, is an excellent
medium through which this light
may be made to flow into the minds
of tlie people. I have wondered why
our clergy do not try to enlighten
their people. Even when our people
beg their jiastors to explain the doe-1 Eighty-one trains now ran every
